OBJECTIVES:

•Identify the SI units of MASS, TEMPERATURE, VOLLUME and

PRESSURE
•Convert given measurements to other units of the same
base quantity
•Realize the importance of unit conversion
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
•Imagine your self in the situation, you are lost in he dessert.
You are now very thirsty and desperate to escape the heat. A
genie suddenly appear, he offered you help. He said “here
are three doors that all lead to safety, you may choose one.
Once you enter you cannot go back. All doors are numbered.
The number represents the distance you are going to travel.
Which door will you choose?”
3 30 300
km m cm
LESSON

•Its not because the number is lesser that

means its shorter, never forget the unit
CONVERSION OF UNITS
• International System of Units
( SI units)
• Used Internationally as
reference for standard
units
CONVERSION UNIT

•MASS
•VOLUME
•TEMPERATURE
•PRESSURE
MASS

•Mass refers to the amount of matter in

an object
•Mass is not weight
•Weight refers to the force ( due to
gravity) applied to an object
•Mass is CONSTANT, Weight is NOT
MASS VS. WEIGHT
.
.
.
EXAMPLE:
How many grams are there in 5 kilograms?
Given: 5 kilograms convert to grams

1000𝑔
5 kg x =5000g
1𝑘𝑔
MASS
• How many kilograms are there in 11000 grams?
• Given: 11000 grams convert to kg

1 𝑘𝑔
11000g x = 11 kg
1000 𝑔
MASS
• Exercises: identify which is heavier
1 kg=1000g
1 g= 1000 mg
10kg or 10,000 g
50000mg or 5 kg
VOLUME

•Is the space occupied by an object

•SI unit – Liters (L) for liquid
𝟑
-- cubic meter ( 𝒎 ) for solids
VOLUME
SOLID VOLUME
•1 cubic centimeter (𝑐𝑚3) = 1,000 cubic millimeter (𝑚𝑚3)
•1 cubic meter (𝑚3) = 1,000,000 𝑐𝑚3
•1,000 (𝑐𝑚3) = 1 cubic decimeter (𝑑𝑚3)
•1000 𝑐𝑚 = 1 liter L
3

•1 𝑐𝑚3 = 1 ml
VOLUME
• Example: how many liters are there in 100,000 mL

1𝐿
100,000mL x = 100 L
1000 𝑚𝐿
VOLUME
•How many mL are there in 15 L

1000 𝑚𝐿
15 L x = 15, 000mL
1𝐿
VOLUME
• Convert the ff:
1 𝑐𝑚3 = 1,000 𝑚𝑚3 1 𝑚3 = 1,000 𝑐𝑚3
1 𝐿3 = 1,00 𝑐𝐿3 1 𝑐𝐿3 = 10 𝑚𝐿3

21 𝑐𝑚3 = ________ 𝑚𝑚3

134 𝑐𝐿3 = ________ 𝑚𝐿3
TEMPERATURE

•Measurement of hot and cold using a thermometer

•SI unit is Kelvin (K)
TEMPERATURE
TEMPERATURE

Example: 100 ⁰C to ⁰F
(100 ⁰C x 1.8) + 32= 212 ⁰F
Example: 100 ⁰F to ⁰C
(100 ⁰F -32) / 1.8= 37.78⁰C
Example: 100 ⁰C to ⁰K
100 ⁰C+ 273. 15= 373.15 K
TRY THIS!
Convert the ff:

23 K to_____ ⁰C
11 ⁰F to _____⁰C
54 ⁰C to ____ ⁰F
PRESSURE

•Pressure is defined as force per unit area. It is

usually more convenient to use pressure rather
than force to describe the influences upon fluid
behavior. The standard unit for pressure is the
Pascal, which is a Newton per square meter.
PRESSURE
Convert 10 Pa to mmHg

0.00750062 𝑚𝑚 𝐻𝑔
10 Pa x = 0.0750062 mm Hg
1 𝑃𝑎
PRESSURE: TRY THIS

Convert the ff:

23 Pa – atm
14 torr – mm Hg
