Translation of Editing and Text

This document discusses the Grammar Translation Method, which is one of the oldest methods for teaching foreign languages. It focuses on teaching grammar rules and translating texts word-for-word between the native and target languages. Key aspects include using the native language for instruction, memorizing isolated vocabulary words, reading difficult texts early, and translating sentences without focus on meaning. While easiest for teachers, it provides little opportunity for students to comprehend or communicate in the target language.

GRAMMAR

TRANSLATION
METHOD
What is GRAMMAR?
Set of rules that explain how words are used in a
language.

What is TRANSLATION?
The process of translating something into a different
language.

What is METHOD?
A way of doing something.
GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD
One of the most traditional methods of teaching a
language.

It was used to teach “dead” languages and literatures.

A method of foreign or second language teaching which

makes use of translation and grammar study as the main
teaching and learning activities.

Teacher-centered.
Purposes of Grammar Translation Method
To help students read and appreciate foreign language
literature.

To help student become more familiar with the grammar

of their native language and also in writing and speaking
their native language better.

To help students to exercise their mental ability.

Key features of Grammar Translation Method
Classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active
use of the target language.
Much vocabulary is taught in the form or list of isolated
words.
Reading of difficult classical text has begun early.
Little attention is paid to the content of the text, which are
treated as exercises in grammatical analysis.
Often the only drills are exercise in translating
disconnected sentences from the target language into the
mother tongue.
Advantages of Grammar Translation Method
Easiest for teachers to use.
Does not require teachers to speak good English or make
good lesson preparations.
Only uses the textbook.
Least stressful for student. Teaching occurs in the first
language.
Students learn the new language without contact with
native speakers.
Disadvantages of Grammar Translation Method
Students lack comprehension. Only translating word-for-
word.

Does not allow students to create meaning in English.

Extensive memorization.

Very little student-teacher and student-student interaction.

Why Grammar Translation still deserves a place
in your classroom?

It is a good starter kit for language learning.

It takes out the guessing game.

It supports all important reading skills.

If you were to teach literature, will you use GTM or
Grammar Translation Method as your way of teaching?
