Uber Case

Uber has diversified into new business lines like food delivery and freight while focusing on issues like safety and sustainability. It operates in 40 Indian cities and is looking to launch financial services there by 2020. Uber faces challenges regulating its status, balancing financial discipline with growth, and transitioning to autonomous vehicles. In the short term, Uber aims to promote emissions controls, ridesharing over individual rides, reduce food waste, and provide driver benefits. Long term goals include encouraging electric vehicles, expanding services, and establishing vehicle rentals and shuttles. While Uber is a sharing economy platform, it exhibits aspects of both sharing and gig economies by facilitating peer-to-peer services through independent contractors.

2. Strategy to manage Uber’s
business environment
– One is a strategy for entering and penetrating markets with the objective of quickly
winning the market and emerging as the dominant firm. Uber typically enters
markets without obtaining regulatory approval.
– The second phase is maintaining and strengthening its market position in the face of
market challenges by its rivals without sacrificing its core platform and challenges
from the institutional environment, such as the possibility of having its drivers
classified as employees rather than as independent contractors. Uber’s most
important resource is the capacity of its network to carry passengers.
– The third is extending its platform to accommodate complementary activities such
as UberEATS and other delivery services.
– The fourth phase is to transition to autonomous vehicles, which generates a host of
challenging issues.

7. Relation between Sharing Economy and Circular Economy

Circular Economy- A circular economic system aims at eliminating waste by continual use of
resources. Circular systems employ reuse, repair, refurbish and recycling to create a close-
loop system, minimizing the use of resource inputs, creation of waste and carbon emission.

• In sharing economy, people rent out their spare assets to others that need them. By doing so it is ensured that the
asset is better utilized and does not get wasted by lying idle. An estimate suggests that 95% of a car’s lifetime is
spent standing idle.
• It does not exactly fit into circular economy but suppose you need a drill machine, ideally you would have bought
one but in comes an app that tells you who in your neighborhood has a drill machine. So now, instead of buying a
new one, two households are sharing the same machine.
• By sharing assets, one reduces the use of resource input thus leading to lower waste creation and carbon
emission. Essentially fulfilling the objectives of a circular economy
