"Strength and Analysis of Basalt Fibre in Concrete": Project Seminar On

This project seminar focuses on determining the strength and analysis of basalt fibre in concrete. The objectives are to determine the effect of different proportions of basalt fibre on compressive and tensile strength of concrete. Tests will be conducted on cubes and cylinders containing 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% basalt fibre at 7 and 28 days to analyze strength variations compared to conventional concrete. Preliminary materials testing and mix design have been completed according to IS standards in preparation for casting specimens and conducting strength tests.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
 To determine effect of different proportion of Basalt fibre in the mix.

 To determine the compressive strength and split tensile strength of

concrete with addition of M Sand Concrete with 0.5%, 1% & 1.5%
of Basalt fibre.

 To determine the total quantity and cost estimation of total concrete

with respect to convention concrete.

 To determine the strength of cubes and cylinders at 28 days by saline

test and comparing with conventional concrete.

 To determine the percentage variation in strength in cubes and

cylinders at 7 days and 28 days.
INTRODUCTION
 Concrete is one of the most common materials used in the construction
industry. There is always a search for concrete with higher strength and
durability.

 Conventional concrete possesses a very low tensile strength, limited

ductility, little resistance to cracking and it doesn’t meet many functional
requirements such as impermeability, resistance to frost adequately.

 To Overcome this defects different types of fibres are added to the

concrete to enhance the strength to the concrete. Fibres act as crack
arrestors in concrete. The different types of fibres used in concrete are
steel fibres, basalt fibres, glass fibres ,polypropylene fibres.

 Basalt fibre is considered as a promising new material. It has good

strength characteristics, resistance to chemical attack, sound insulation
properties.
LITERATURE REVIEW

 “Effect of Alccofine on strength characteristics of Concrete of

different grades” -May -2017.
Author: Malvika Gautam, Dr. Hemant Sood.

 It was found that the addition of Alccofine shows an early strength

gaining property long term strength.
 Alccofine concrete M70 was found to increase the compressive
strength of concrete on all age.
 From the experimental survey it was observed that the result of
alccofine material increases the strength (both in compression and in
flexure) to a large extent at approximately 10% replacement level of
cement.
 “Effects of Basalt Fibres on Mechanical Properties of Concrete”-
2018.
Author:A. M. El-Gelani,C.M. High, S. H. Rizkalla and E. A Abdalla.

 Results indicated that the use of basalt fibre additives has

insignificant effects on the compressive strengthof plain concrete at
3, 7 and 28 days, where the increase in strength did not exceed 6 %
in the best case.

 On the other hand, the use of basalt increased the compressive

strength of concrete containing fly ash by a percentage ranged from
15 % to 40 % depending on fibre type and volume fraction.
 “Strength and Analysis of Basalt Fibre in Concrete”– 2017.
(IJCRGG, ISSN: 0974-4290, ISSN (Online):2455-9555 Vol.10 No.8),
Author : K.Sathish Kumar, K. Tamilarasan, CODEN (USA):

 The 28 days compressive strength for M25 grade goes on increasing

and it was found to be maximum at 1.0% addition of basalt fibre and
after this the strength is decreases.

 The increase in 28 days compressive strength at 1.0% addition was

found to be 11.27 Mpa compared to the conventional concrete.
BASALT FIBRE

 Basalt fibre is a material made from extremely fine fibres of basalt,

which is composed of the minerals plagioclase, pyroxene, and
olivine.

 It is a continuous fibre made of melting basalt stone at 1450 to 1500

degrees through Platinum rhodium alloy bushing.

 It is similar to fibreglass, having better physicomechanical properties

than fibreglass, but being significantly cheaper than carbon fibre.

 Basalt fibres is considered as environment friendly and non-

hazardous materials and hence it is known as green industrial
material.

ADVANTAGES OF BASALT FIBRE
 Basalt fibres can prove to be best reinforcement due to its tensile strength.

 Better chemical resistance and High electrical insulating properties.

 Better environmental friendliness.

 It can be used renewable alternative to metal building material.

 The processing of basalt fibres does not require special equipment or

technologies.

 Excellent adhesion to polymer resins and rubbers.

 Relatively high mechanical strength, abrasion resistance and elasticity.

PROPERTIES OF BASALT FIBRE
Basalt fibres have different properties as follows-
1.Thermal Resistance
 It can easily withstand the temperature of 12000C to13000C for
hours continuously, without any physical change.
 Unstressed basalt fibres and fabrics can maintain their integrity even
up to 12500C, which makes them superior compared to glass and
carbon fibre.

2.Mechanical Strength
 Basalt fibre has tensile strength 3000-4840 M Pa.
 Basalt fiber has slightly higher specific gravity, 2.6 – 2.8 g/cc, than
other fibers.

3.Corrosion and Fungi Resistance

 Basalt fiber has better corrosion resistance. It does not undergo any
toxic reaction with water and air or gases also.
 Moisture regain and moisture content of basalt fibers exist in the
range of less than 1%.
 Basalt materials have strong resistance against the action of fungi
and micro-organisms.

3.Abrasion Property

 Basalt material is extremely hard and has hardness values between 5

to 9 on Mohr’s scale, which results in better abrasion property.
APPLICATIONS OF BASALT FIBRE
 Basalt fibres are be used in the interiors, partitioning of buildings,
fire proof doors, and sound insulations for the building.

 It is used as an warmed panels for construction of prefabricated

houses such as roofing.

 It is used in port construction and sea platforms because of better

chemical and salt resistance property and also for environment
safety.

 It is also used in tubes, bars ,pipes fittings, internal heat and sound
insulation of floors, walls, frame walls, boiler shells, tanks,
chimneys, fire protection structures, etc due to its strong applications
in construction materials.
