(IEC) from January 24-31, 2015
Expected 15,000 priests,
missionaries and the laity
arrive in Cebu from all over
the world. For the eights
days , that is from January 24
to 31, 2016.
They will bear witness to Jesus
Christ the Eucharist.

Hundreds of thousands more are

expected to join the events esp.
pontifical masses and processions
where everyone will renew their
personal relationship with Christ as
the center of their lives.
51ST International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) from
January 24-31, 2015

• The last time the IEC was held in the Philippines

was in 1937. this was the 33rd IEC held in Manila.
• The IEC was the first to be held in Asia. Over
600,000 people alone were believed to have
attended the religious procession that culminated
the congress. That was in 1937, when the country’s
population was only 27 million and the only way to
travel to Manila was by ships plying the sealanes.

• Why Cebu? The most obvious answer because it

was there in Cebu that the seeds of Christianity in
the Far East where first planted and grew following
the successful settling of the island by the Spanish
Conquistadores Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565.
MARY’S APPARITION AT FATIMA
• When you have a place to go to at the end
of the day—you call that a HOME.
• When you have someone to love and be
loved—you call that a FAMILY.
• When you can be accepted by others as you
are, you call that FRIENDS.
• And when you have all these three: HOME,
FAMILY and FRIENDS, you call them
BLESSINGS.

THE HIGHEST FORM OF PRAYER

EUCHARIST
WHAT IS EUCHARIST?
• The “Eucharist,” comes from the
Greek word, “euchariste sas” which
means, “thanksgiving.”

• This is the term chosen by the early

Christians to translate into Greek the
Hebrew word for “blessing.”
• Eucharist is essentially a prayer and
celebration. It is an act of praise and
thanksgiving,

• A movement of worship by which the

people respond to the great things
the Lord has done.
Sacrament and Sacrifice
• Christ does not have to offer
himself again and again, like the
high priest going into the
sanctuary year after year with
the blood that is not his own, or
else he would have had to
suffer over and over again since
the world began. Instead of
that he has made his
appearance once and for all,
now when history reached its
fulfillment, to do away with sin
by sacrificing himself. In
accordance with this divine will
we have been sacrificed by an
offering made once for all, the
body of Jesus Christ.” Hebrew 9:25-26; 10:10
• Men are born to live, Christ
was born to die.

• He was born to in
Bethlehem to give his life
for our salvation, in
fulfillment of his priestly
mission. Christ wants us to
remember him for his
death.

• Christ himself gave us the

fitting memorial of it, re-
actualize and make present
the very sacrifice of Calvary,
to remind us that he died
so that we may have life, so
that we maybe freed from
tyranny of sin.
• He told us the exact way he
wanted us to commemorate his
death, his resurrection, and his
ascension to heaven.
• The memorial he gave is the
MASS.
• It is a mistake to think that the
Mass is a memorial service like that
on Heroes Day or a sort of
imitation of the Last Supper, or a
collection of prayers.
• The mass is not just a collection of
prayers, no matter how beautiful
or moving they may be.
• Our Lord becomes present in the
Mass doing something deeply
supernatural: performing a
sacrifice
• “On the night of the Last
Supper, Christ instituted
the Mass.
• He offered his body and
blood under the species of
bread and wine to God
the Father.
• Taking bread, Christ said,
“THIS IS MY BODY which
will be given up for you.”
taking the chalice, he said,
“THIS IS THE CUP OF MY
BLOOD, the blood of the
new and everlasting
covenant. It will be shed
for you and for all men so
that sins may be forgiven.”

THE EUCHARIST MAKE US ONE

• Some of us are fortunate enough to be

able to celebrate Eucharist weekly, if not
daily. We love the “Mass”, we sing, pray
and are sent forth each week. Do we
really understand what we are doing, or
what we are agreeing to when we say
AMEN so many times during the Mass?
We will deepen our appreciation for the
Eucharist in this session.
Story
• Friday evenings were always a bit special for Mr. &
Mrs. Song. They would prepare a meal together
with their four children and they all would make
an effort to be together. It was important for the
whole family to be there. One Friday evening,
only Mr. and Mrs. Song were preparing the dinner.
The phone rang and it was their daughter Lily
who was out with her friends and asked if she
could stay out since her friends asked her to go
shopping and then to dinner.
• Mr. Song was very disappointed but he said, OK.
Chris had just come in from a game of football and
looked awful but he just sat down to table. At least
they were and could enjoy the meal together. Mrs.
Song realized that Michael, her second son had
gone up to take a shower and discovered he had
fallen asleep after his shower. The dinner started
without him. Mr. & Mrs. Song looked at each other
and wondered why the meal together was so
difficult to keep going and were worried about
how they would be as a family in the future.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
• 1. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS STORY?

• 2. COMPARE THE FAMILY MEAL OF THE

SONG FAMILY WITH OUR SUNDAY
CELEBRATIONOF THE EUCHARIST?
• The children in the family take for granted the
meaning and preciousness of the family meal. In
the same way, many Catholics are not aware of
the importance and beauty of the Eucharist.

• The family is in danger of losing their unity and

closeness. If the children don’t try little harder to
be part of the family. Catholics who do not feel
responsible for the life of the Church and are just
bystanders at the Eucharist put the whole
community in danger.
• The parents will have to remind the children of why they
agreed on this meal every Friday. An important part of
the teachings of the Church is teaching about the
meaning our worship and rituals. We need to remind
ourselves regularly why celebrate the Mass and the
importance of Sunday.

• The Song family enjoyed the meal and participated more

when they also took responsibility to prepare the meal
together. If the parish liturgical community committee
does not prepare well and he singing is done without
any practice and the homily is poor, the people will feel
very disappointed because their celebration is not
respected.
• The basic love and care between the family
members is reflected in their willing presence.
Similarly in the Eucharist we express the love and
care we have for each other and for God in the
way we are present.
A Deeper Look at the Meaning of the Eucharist

• A. Mark 14: 22-28 (Take and Eat)

• 1 Cor. 10: 16-17 (The Cup we bless)

• B. John 6: 53: 58 (unless you eat my flesh)

• 1 Cor. 11: 26-29 (Proclaiming his death)
The Church teaches

• When you are teaching, command and

exhort the people to be faithful to the
assembly of the Church. Let them not fail
to attend, but let them gather faithfully
together. Let no one deprive the Church
by staying away. If they do, they deprive
the body of Christ of one of its members –
do not make light of your own selves, do
not deprive our Savior of his members, do
not rest, do not scatter his body.
Mark 14: 22-28
During this meal, Jesus took bread, blessed
and broke it and gave it to the disciples, “Take
this ,” he said, “This is my body.” He likewise
said, took the cup, gave thanks and passed it
to them: “This is my blood, the blood of the
covenant to be poured out on behalf of the
many.” I solemnly assure you, I will never
again drink of the fruit of the vine until the
day when I drink it new in the reign of God.”
1 Cor. 10: 16-17

Is not the cup of blessings we bless a sharing in

the blood of Christ?

And is not the bread we break a sharing in the

body of Christ?
Because the loaf of bread is one, we, many
though we are , are one body, for we all
partake of the one loaf.
John 6: 53: 58
• Let me solemnly assure, “if you do not eat
the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his
blood you have no life in you.
• He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my
blood has life eternal and I will raise him up
on the last day.
• For my flesh is real food and my blood real
drink. The man who feeds on my flesh and
drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
1 Cor. 11: 26-29
• Every time then you eat this bread and this
drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the
Lord until he comes.
• This means that whoever eats this bread or
drink this comes of the Lord unworthily sins
against the body and blood of the Lord.
• A man should examine himself first: only then
should he eat of the bread and drink his cup.
He who eats and drinks of the cup without
recognizing the body eats and drinks a
judgment on himself.
