CEms Uras 26

The document summarizes an ABB EL3020 infrared gas analyzer that uses non-dispersive infrared absorption to measure up to 4 components such as CO, NO, and SO2. It uses optopneumatic detectors filled with gas to detect pressure changes from absorbed infrared radiation. Calibration can be done automatically using built-in calibration cells or manually with test gases controlled by solenoid valves. The analyzer includes electrochemical oxygen sensors that produce a current proportional to oxygen concentration by oxidizing hydroxyl ions at electrodes.

ANALYZER
ABB EL3020(URAS26)
Gases and their sensing wavelengths

• Carbon monoxide CO - 4.67 µm,

• NO - 5.3 µm
• SO2 - 7.35 µm
Infrared analyzer module Uras26
• Measurement principle Non-dispersive infrared absorption in the λ =
2.5 to 8 μm wavelength range.
• Photometer to measure from 1 to 4 components with 1 or 2 beam
paths and 1 or 2 receivers in each beam path
Measuring Principle:
The measurement principle of the Uras is based on the capability of gas molecules
to specifically absorb infrared (IR) radiation. This means that energy is removed
from a light beam within a certain frequency range, depending on the gas
concentration. IN most infrared gas analysers a photo Detector is used to detect
this effect.
This is not the case with the Uras: It contains gas-filled, so-called “optopneumatic”
detectors, in which the sample of interest is held. The radiant energy absorbed by
the fill gas causes a change in temperature and thereby a change in pressure in the
detector.

This change in pressure evokes an Electrical signal via a membrane capacitor. The
correlation between the detector gas and the sample gas provides an extremely
high selective sensitivity with regard to gases such as CO,CO2, SO2, NO, CH4 and
NO – to name but a few.

Calibration
Calibration can be performed automatically or manually. Automatic calibration
for all sample components together – is normally started on a cyclically time-
controlled basis; it can also be started by an external control signal or via the
Modbus as well as manually on the display and operator control unit of the gas
analyzer.
Normally, simplified calibration methods with the built-in calibration cells or
the so-called single-point calibration are used for automatic calibration.
If calibration with test gases is required the control of solenoid valves for
switching on test gases, zero gas and sample gas via digital outputs can be
configured.
Calibration Cells
The use of calibration cells (option) enables the end-point calibration
of the Uras26 to be carried out without test gas cylinders.
A calibration cell is installed in each optical beam path of the analyzer
as per the order. Each calibration cell is filled with a test gas, whose
composition and concentration has been adapted to the sample
components and measuring ranges which have been installed in the
respective optical beam path.
The calibration cells are moved into the optical beam path for the end-
point calibration.

Electrochemical Oxygen Sensors
The cylinder includes two electrodes immersed in potassium hydroxide,
though other aqueous electrolytes can be used. As the oxygen diffuses
through the sample it produces positively charge hydroxyl ions at the
cathode. These hydroxyl ions migrate to the anode where they are re-
oxidised, generating a current that is proportional to the oxygen
concentration
