Control Systems Presentation On Block Diagram Algebra

1) Block diagram algebra allows representation of linear systems using block diagrams consisting of signals, blocks, summing points, and pickoff points. 2) There are rules for reducing block diagrams by combining cascade blocks, combining parallel blocks, eliminating minor feedback loops, and rearranging summing and pickoff points. 3) Block diagrams allow analysis of complex systems by breaking them into individual component blocks and simplifying using the reduction rules until the canonical form is obtained.

Definition of block diagram algebra
A convenient graphical repr uch a linear system (transfer function) is called Block
Diagram Algebra.
A complex system is described by the interconnection of the different blocks for the
individual components. Analysis of such a complicated system needs simplification of
block diagrams by the use of block diagram algebra.
In general, the block diagram of a linear time invariant system consists of four
components, namely signal, block (with transfer function), summing point and pickoff
point
BLOCK DIAGRAM REDUCTION RULES
How to solve a block diagram

Using the above rules you have to follow below simple steps to solve the block
diagrams:
1. Combine all cascade blocks
2. Combine all parallel blocks
3. Eliminate all minor (interior) feedback loops
4. Shift summing points to left
5. Shift takeoff points to the right
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until the canonical form is obtained
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BLOCK
DIAGRAM TECHNIQUE
Advantages
1)The functional operation of the system can be observed from block diagram
2)It gives information about performance of the system and is used for analysis
and design of control system
3)It is easy to construct a block diagram for a big and complicated system
Disadvantages
1)It is not unique
2)Source of energy is not shown in diagram
3)It does not give information about physical construction of the system
4)Low efficiency if input output difference is large
Conclusion
Thus we see that a big and complicated circuit can be reduced to a simple
circuit by following some simple rules.Transfer function can be easily calculated
from the simple circuit which otherwise would have been very much
complicated to solve. For this reason signal flow graphs was invented which is a
even quicker and easier way to find transfer functions of complicated circuits.
