Solving Rational Equations

This document discusses solving rational equations. It defines rational equations and explains how to solve them by eliminating denominators using the least common denominator. Examples are provided to demonstrate solving rational equations by multiplying each term by the LCD, combining like terms, and solving for the variable. Students will practice solving rational equations individually and in a group activity before taking a quiz. The document emphasizes recalling definitions, solving procedures, and checking solutions. Rational equations are used to find unknowns related to distance, time, speed, and business applications.

Solving Rational Equations

OBJECTIVES: At the end of one

hour, students will be able to:
Recall the definition of
rational equation;

Solve rational equations.

To solve a rational equation:
Eliminate denominators by multiplying
each term of the equation by the least
common denominator;

Note that eliminating denominators

may introduce extraneous solutions.
Check the solutions of the transformed
equations with the original equation.
How are rational equations used in life?
It is used to find the unknown
especially in solving for distance, time
and speed
It is used in solving for areas of polygon
It is used in quantitative business
applications like maximizing profit and
minimizing cost
𝟏 𝒙+𝟓 𝟏
Example No. 1: Solve + =
𝒙 𝟑𝒙 𝟑𝒙

Solution:
Prime Factorization: x  (x)(1)
3x  (3)(x)____
LCD: (3)(x)(1) = 3x

 Multiply the LCD to all the terms:

1 𝑥+5 1
(3x) + (3x) = (3x)
𝑥 3𝑥 3𝑥
1 𝑥+5 1
 (3x) + (3x) = (3x)
𝑥 3𝑥 3𝑥
3+ (x + 5) = 1
3 + x + 5 = 1
8 + x = 1
8 + x – 1 = 0
7 + x = 0
x = -7  answer
𝟏 𝟏 𝟕
Example No. 1: Solve − =
𝒙𝟐 +𝟖𝒙 𝒙+𝟖 𝒙𝟐 +𝟖𝒙

Solution:
Prime Factorization: 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖𝒙  (x)(x+8)
𝒙+𝟖 (1) (x+8)___
LCD: (1)(x)(x+8) = (x)(x+8)

 Multiply the LCD to all the terms:

𝟏 𝟏 𝟕
𝟐
𝒙 +𝟖𝒙
(x)(x+8) −
𝒙+𝟖
(x)(x+8) = 𝟐
𝒙 +𝟖𝒙
(x)(x+8)
𝟏 𝟏 𝟕
 𝟐 (x)(x+8) − (x)(x+8) = 𝟐 (x)(x+8)
𝒙 +𝟖𝒙 𝒙+𝟖 𝒙 +𝟖𝒙
1- x = 7
1- x – 7 = 0
 -x – 6 = 0
 -6 = x
 x = - 6  answer
