Windows has evolved from MS-DOS in 1981 to today's Windows 10. Key releases include Windows 1.0 in 1985 which added a graphical shell to MS-DOS, Windows 3.0 in 1990 which improved memory management, Windows NT in 1993 which was designed for stability and security, Windows 95 in 1995 which introduced the Start button and taskbar, and Windows 10 in 2015 which brought back the Start button and integrated Cortana. Each new version built upon the previous to offer improved features, functionality and performance.

• MS-DOS was a renamed form of 86-DOS –
owned by Seattle Computer Products, written
by Tim Paterson.
• Created on August 1981

• 16-bit multi-tasking shell on top of an existing
MS-DOS installation
• Limited multi-tasking
• The development of Windows began after Bill
Gates saw a demonstration of VisiCorp's
Vision.
• Created on 20th November 1985

• Allows application windows to overlap
• First version to integrate the control panel
• March 17, 1988, Apple filed a lawsuit against
Microsoft and HP, accusing them of copying
the Macintosh System

• Protected/Enhanced mode to run Windows
applications with reduced memory issues
• Better memory management
• Developed based on work by David Weise and
Murray Sargent in 1989.
