Triangles can be proven congruent using several different criteria:
- SAS (side-angle-side): Two sides and the included angle of one triangle are equal to those of another triangle.
- ASA (angle-side-angle): Two angles and the included side of one triangle are equal to those of another.
- AAS (angle-angle-side): Two angles and a non-included side of one triangle are equal to those of another.
- HL (hypotenuse-leg): For right triangles, if the hypotenuse and one leg are equal in both triangles, then the triangles are congruent.

TRIANGLE
CONGRUENCE Group 1 How to tell if triangles are congruent
◦Any triangle is defined by six measures
(three sides, three angles). But you don't need to know all of them to show that two triangles are congruent. Various groups of three will do. Triangles are congruent if: ◦ SAS (side angle side) A pair of corresponding sides and the included angle are equal. ASA (angle side angle) A pair of corresponding angles and the included side are equal. AAS (angle angle side) A pair of corresponding angles and a non-included side are equal. HL (hypotenuse leg of a right triangle) Two right triangles are congruent if the hypotenuse and one leg are equal. Congruent Triangles - Three sides equal (SSS) ◦ Definition: Triangles are congruent if all three sides in one triangle are congruent to the corresponding sides in the other. ◦ There are five ways to test that two triangles are congruent. This is one of them (SSS). If all three sides in one triangle are the same length as the corresponding sides in the other, then the triangles are congruent. Congruent Triangles - Two sides and included angle (SAS) ◦ Definition: Triangles are congruent if any pair of corresponding sides and their included angles are equal in both triangles. ◦ There are five ways to test that two triangles are congruent. This is one of them (SAS). If any two corresponding sides and their included angle are the same in both triangles, then the triangles are congruent. Congruent Triangles - Two angles and included side (ASA) ◦ Definition: Triangles are congruent if any two angles and their included side are equal in both triangles. ◦ There are five ways to test that two triangles are congruent. This is one of them (ASA). For a list see Congruent Triangles. If any two angles and the included side are the same in both triangles, then the triangles are congruent. Congruent Triangles - Two angles and an opposite side (AAS) ◦ Definition: Triangles are congruent if two pairs of corresponding angles and a pair of opposite sides are equal in both triangles. ◦ There are five ways to test that two triangles are congruent. This is one of them (AAS). If there are two pairs of corresponding angles and a pair of corresponding opposite sides that are equal in measure, then the triangles are congruent. ◦ By opposite side we mean a side opposite either one of the angles. Either one will do, but it has to be the same one in both triangles obviously. In the figure below we have chosen the side QR which is opposite the angle P. Congruent Triangles - Hypotenuse and leg of a right triangle. (HL) ◦ Definition: Two right triangles are congruent if the hypotenuse and one corresponding leg are equal in both triangles. ◦ There are five ways to test that two triangles are congruent. This is one of them (HL). For a list see Congruent Triangles. If, in two right triangles the hypotenuse and one leg are equal, then the triangles are congruent. How triangle congruence is applied in real life ◦ Mostly congruent triangles are used for construction of things like bridges and buildings because they are considered more stable and strong to use. ◦ Congruent Triangles are an important part of our everyday world, especially for reinforcing many structures. Two triangles are congruent if they are completely identical. This means that the matching sides must be the same length and the matching angles must be the same size.
