Function of Seal oil system
In order to prevent escape of hydrogen from the generator it is
essential to provide shaft seals at both the ends where the shaft
extends through the casing.
This is achieved by providing radial oil films in the system, this oil
being kept at a higher pressure than that of the hydrogen inside the
generator.
The location where the rotor shaft passes through the stator casing
are provided with radial or ring type seal rings. The seal ring is formed
by joining two semicircular rings.

Float tank
Oil from the enlargement section flow into the float oil tank,
this float tank function is further to separate the H2 from the
seal oil.
This tank has a float valve installed inside by which the oil level
of the tank is controlled.
Manual bypass valve and oil level gauge is provided outside of
the tank, in order to manually control the oil level if required.

Vacuum device
The vacuum device mainly includes vacuum oil tank, circulation
pump & vacuum pump. They are oil purification equipment in single
ring type seal oil system.

Oil water detectors
•Oil water detection enunciators' are provided to find the oil or
water leak inside generator.
•Float with magnetic steel and magnetic switch are provided
inside the detectors, when oil or water level increases the switch
closes and raises the alarm.
•Two oil water level detectors are provided for generator & one
oil level detector connected to drain enlargement section is
provided for seal oil system.

Oil water detectors
DPR
The differential pressure between oil and gas is set by compression of the spring
with help of the adjusting nut.
Compression of the spring leads to down movement of the valve stem and valve
cone.
This movement reduces the pressure through the valve as the valve closes and
increases the pressure through the line.
Increase in h2 pressure will lead to compression of the main operating bellow
which in turn will move the valve head in turn valve and valve cone to close the
valve
Closing of the valve will reduce the pressure of the oil at the out let of the valve
while oil pressure going to the seals will increase.

Starting procedure of Seal oil system
Pre Start
1 Ensure all work permits of Turbo generator and seal oil system are cancelled and all
men and materials are removed.
3 Ensure sufficient oil level(>1.0 M) is available in Vacuum tank of seal oil system.
4 Ensure sealing water supply(pr.>0.4 MPa) to vacuum pump of seal oil system is running
6 Check all suction & discharge valves of pumps, oil filters are open.
8 Check electrical supply to both pumps is ready, start seal oil vacuum pump and main
tank press as -0.04 Mpa.
9. Start the recirculation pump.
10.Release Local emergency Stop push button.
11.Start the seal oil pump ,check pump outlet pressure in local as 0.8 Mpa
Post start
1 Check for any abnormal sound/Vibrations from Motor & Pump
3.Note : During change over time keep other pump on standby mode and keep
DC Seal oil pumping manual mode and stop the running pump.
4. Note : If stand by pump not started then immediately start DC seal oil pump

Oil circuit when both Main SOP & DC SOP stop:-
Bearing lubrication oil pipeline – oil filter – DPR-Generator seal oil bush– Generator inside
(Hydrogen side) – Enlargement tank - floater oil tank – Air detraining tank (mixed with generator
lubricating oil drain) - main oil tank.

Emergency operation of Seal Oil Pump
1. If Hydrogen tries to come out from generator rotor ends, check Seal oil pump discharge
pressure .If Pressure is low stop the faulty pump ensure starting of another pump if not,
start manually.
3. Abnormal sound ,spark, smoke occurs stop the faulty pump and start standby pump
immediately.
4. When Unit is running @ 3000 RPM, If running pump trips and another one is not
available, trip the machine (generator), depressurize hydrogen up to 0.05 MPa and
charge emergency seal oil line immediately.
