TEXT STRUCTURE

Refers to the way

an author arranges
information in his
writing.

2
DEFINITION
Classification text structure is an
organizational structure in which writers sort
items or ideas into categories according to
commonalities. It allows the author to take an
overall idea and split it into parts for the
purpose of providing clarity and description.
Sorting can take place on many levels with
topics, subtopics, categories, subcategories,
and so on.
For readers, a classification piece can be
identified by looking for use of certain words,
such as: first, finally, to begin, next, in
addition, on the other hand, for example, or
then. 3
During a classification piece ask yourself these questions to further help you understand:
"What specific topic, people, ideas, or what other things are being described and grouped?",
"How are they being described?" and, "What is important to remember about them?" 4
PROCESS
For writers, there are several steps to be
followed in the process of developing a written
piece that follows a classification text structure:
1. Decide on a main topic.
2. Divide the main topic into two or more
subtopics.
3. For each subtopic, provide information and
details to clarify and explain, or divide each
subtopic further by creating categories for each
subtopic.
4. If categories have been developed, provide
information and details to clarify and explain
each category. 5
5. Begin writing following the proper format.
PROPER FORMAT
Introduction
Including a thesis statement, a
description of the topic as a
whole, and an explanation of
the process and purpose for
dividing the main topic into
subtopics and beyond.

6
PROPER FORMAT
Body
Least important subtopic first, most
important subtopic last
Subtopic One followed by categories
if needed
Subtopic Two followed by categories
if needed
Subtopic Three, etc.

7
PROPER FORMAT

Conclusion
A basic summary of
each subtopic and
category followed by a
restating of the original
thesis statement.

Schools
Different students attend various types of schools; however, they can usually be classified as
either public, private religious, private non religious, or alternative. Public schools are funded by
the state, and the majority of students in the United States attend them. Private religious schools
are based around a particular faith, such as Catholicism, Judaism, and so forth. The religion is
part of the every day lives of the students and they also learn about the faiths. All types of private
schools do not receive state funding. Therefore, private non religious schools are simply just that:
schools which do not receive state funding and have the ability to make their own rules.
Alternative schools can be made up of a variety of different categories, such as the Montessori
program or technical schools. Most students who attend class in an actual school building go to
one of these types of institutions.
