Conceptual Difference of

SEX and GENDER

SEX: a natural distinguishing variable based on


biological attributes, such as:
• physical attributes – genitalia, reproductive
organs
• genetic attributes – chromosomes, hormones

Sex is universal, biological & fixed


Objectives:
At the end of the session the
participant is expected to have,
1. Differentiated sex and gender;

2. Identified the DETERMINANTS OF sex;

3. Identified the implications of


gender as a social construct; and

4. Appreciated sex & Gender as factors to ones


attainment of full & SATISFYING life.
Expectations from Men and Women

1. Who are expected to be fickle-

2. Who are expected to be brave?
3. Who are expected to be strong?
4. Who are expected to be emotional?
5. Who are expected to be nurturing?

women that often have negative
connotations.
 Women = housewives, loving mothers
and wives, martyrs, victims, mistresses
or scheming and wicked villains,
 Men = strong, determined, courageous
and principled.
How do we
develop a sense
of being male or
female?
• By 1 year, infants can discriminate male
photographs from female photographs
• By 2-3 years, children tell us they know
about gender
• They use “mommy” and “daddy”
labels correctly
• They use “boy” and “girl” labels
correctly
• They accurately label themselves as
either a boy or girl
• Between 3-5 years, children still believe
they can change gender identities if they
want to

• Between 5-7 years, children have a firm,


stable, future-oriented identity as a boy or
a girl
