Class Notes

The document provides examples of solving various quadratic equations by factoring them using the zero product property and zero factor theorem. It explains the steps to solve quadratic equations which are to write the equation in general form, factor the quadratic expression, apply the zero factor theorem to set each factor equal to zero, and then solve the resulting equations. Examples are given of factoring and solving quadratic equations as well as the definitions of a factor and the zero product property and zero factor theorem.

Can you remember?

3x²+9=2x+1
(x+3)(x-2)=0
x²-31=18
(2x-3)²=49
What is a factor?
2x²-8x
-3s²+9s
4x+20x²
5t-10t²
s²+8s+12
x²-10x+21

Zero product
property
Zero Factor Theorem:
If a quadratic equation can be
written as a product of two first
degree polynomials, then
solutions can be found by setting
each factor equal to zero.
x²-5x=14
Step 1:

Write the equation in general

form. (equated to zero)

Step 2:

Factor the quadratic.

Step 3:

Apply the Zero factor

theorem.
Step 4:

Solve the equations.

2x²-3=5x
x²=10x-25
x²=4x
x(x+2)-17=18
x²=25
Factor then solve
• x²+7x=0 • x²-14=5x
• 6s²+18s=0 • 11r+15=-2r
• t²+8t+16=0 • x²-25=0
• x²-10x+25=0 • 81-4x²=0
• h²+6h=16 • 4s²+9=12s
