What Is A Sonnet?: Understanding The Forms, Meter, Rhyme, and Other Aspects of The Sonnet

A sonnet is a 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter with a specific rhyme scheme. There are two main types of sonnets - the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet, which has an octave rhyme scheme followed by a sestet, and the English or Shakespearean sonnet with three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. Sonnets typically introduce a problem in the beginning and provide a resolution, and can be about any subject including love or nature. Francesco Petrarch was an influential Italian poet who popularized the sonnet form through his collection addressing his love for Laura.
