Introduction

Definition of Boiler
 a closed vessel or
arrangement of vessels and
tubes, together with a
furnace or other heat source,
in which steam or other
vapor is generated from
water to drive turbines or
engines.
PRINCIPLE OF WORKING

Boiler is a closed vessel which contain

water. This water is heated by hot flue
gases,produced by combustion of fuels.

These hot gases come in contact with

water vessel where the heat of these
gases transfer to the water and
consequently steam is produce in the
boiler.
• Externally fired and internally fired
• Forced circulation and natural
circulation
• High pressure and low pressure boilers
• Stationery and portable boiler
• Single tube and multi-tube boilers
• Fire tube and water tube boiler
Method of firing

• The furnace is provided outside/under the

boiler.
• This method of firing is used in Babcock and
Wilcox Boiler.
• The furnace is provided inside the shell and is
completely surrounded by water colled
surfaces.
• The method is used in Lancashire, Locomotive
Boilers.
Based on Circulation
Natural circulation boilers
•In which the circulation of water/steam
is caused by the density difference
which is due to the temperature
varitation.
Forced circulation boilers
 In which circulation of water/steam is caused by a
pump i.e. externally assisted circulation.
Low pressure boilers
•boilers producing steam lower than 80bar.
e.g. cochran boilers, cornish boiler.

HIGH PRESSURE BOILER

•Boilers producing steam of 80bar and above.
e.g. Babcock and wilcox boiler.
Based on utility of boiler

Stationary boiler
•Such boilers are stationary and are
extensively used in power plants,
industrial processes, heating etc.
portable boiler
•Such boilers are portable and are of
small size. e.g. locomotive boilers.
Based on no.of tubes
Single tube boiler
If single tube is used to pass hot gases
then it is single tube boiler.
e.g cornish
MULTI TUBE BOILER
If many of tubes are used to pass hot
gases then it is multi tube boiler.
e.g. lancashire boiler
• The hot gases pass through the tubes
that are surrounded by water.
 Lancashire boiler
 Locomotive boiler
WATER TUBE BOILER

• The water passes through the tubes and

hot gases produced by combustion of
fuel, flow outside. E.g. Babcock wilcox
boiler.
Advantages
Steam generation capacity is high. It is
about 2000 to 40000 kg/hr.
It occupies less space.
Replacement of defective tubes is easy.
It isthe only boiler that is used to generate
large quantity of heat in power station.
Inspection of these types of boiler can be
done anytime during its working.
Boilers are classified into fire tube or
water tube boilers depending on
whether the heat source is inside or
outside the tubes.
The goal in both cases is to maximize
the heat transfer between the water and
the hot gases heating it.
