Biography
1.Generic Structure
The purpose of a biographical recount is to
inform by retelling past events and
achievements in a person’s life.
Part of Biography
a) Part 1: orientation
b) Part 2: series
c) Part 3: reorientation
Orientation
It given the reader the background information as two why this
person is.Noteworthy and should have a biography written about
the. The opening paragraph should answer the questions: who,
what, where, when, and how.
Series
It presents a series of events, usually told in
chronological order. Here the writer might refer
to a certain time on line.
Reorientation
It consists of a type of conclusion with a comment on
the contributions this person has made or a summary
and evaluation of the person’s achievement.
2.Language Features
• A biographical recount uses specific names of the people involved
in the biography.
• It is mainly written in simple past tense (the final paragraph could
also include the present tense).
• A biographical recount also uses liking word to do with time.
• A biographical recount describes events, so it uses many verb or
action verb.
Characteristic of
Biography
• It is not written by the subject.It is always written in the third
person.
• It is based on the research not on imagination.Describing the
subject’s surroundings (where, when, and how the person
lived).
• Showing how the person affected other people’s life through
their behavior, discoveries, social reform etc.
• Supplying details that illustrate the person’s individuality.
• Using vivid language to narrate the events
• It is arranged chronologically.
Example
Orientation
Bung Tomo is a hero of Surabaya known for his role
in encouraging the people to resist the return of the
Dutch through the army NICA.Ia born in Surabaya,
East Java, October 3, 1920 and died in Padang
Arafah, Saudi Arabia, October 7, 1981 at the age of
61 years.
Series
He worked as a civil servant, as a staff person at a
private company, as an assistant in the office of
government tax and employee small import-export
company Belanda.Sutomo never become a
successful journalist. Then he joined with a number
of political and social groups.
Re-orientation
Although Indonesia lost led by Bung Tomo in the
Battle of 10 November, but the incident is still noted
as one of the most important events in the history of
Independence Indonesia.Finally awarded the title of
national hero to the Bung Tomo coincide on Heroes'
Day on November 10, 2008.
