WHAT IS COMPUTER ?
By Definition :

--- Is an electronic machine that processes


data and transforms the same into
useful information.

By Technical Definition :

--- Is a machine that assists humans in


performing their work.
Examples :

1. ATM - Automatic Teller Machine

2. Scanning Machines

3. Calculating Machines
A. Capabilities of a Computer
1. It can follow instructions in a pre-
determined manner.
2. It can recall what it has done and can recal
instructions whenever needed.

3. It can handle arithmetic operation


Accurately at a very high speed.
4. When offered several alternatives, the
Computer can make a decision. It can
Identify, for example, whether a given
Condition is True or False.

5. It can “talk” with a computer user and with


other machines by sending messages.
Main Components of a Computer.
B. Limitations of a Computer
1. It can not solve a problem by itself.
- It needs a program in order to work.
2. It is not capable of deciding by itself whether the
given data is correct or not, unless specified in
the program.
3. Although it gives accurate results, it is not free
from making errors resulting from the
malfunctioning of one of its components,
electrical fluctuations, and other related
unavoidable conditions.
Starting Windows
• Starting Windows from the Start Menu

1. Click the Start Button on the Task Bar


2. Point to Programs
3. Click Microsoft Word.
Note : sometimes Microsoft Word program may be
located in different folder.Look for it within the
programs folders.
Understanding the
Microsoft Word Window
Elements :
1. Title Bar - Displays the program and a document
name.
2. Menu Bar - Contains the names of the Word menus
That are available.
3. Minimize Button - shrinks the program window
to a button on the taskbar.
4. Maximize Button - expands the program window
so it fills the entire screen.
5. Close Button - Closes the program window and
exits the program
6. Toolbars - Contain buttons that you may click to
carry out commands that you use most
frequently. You can display additional
toolbars as you need them.
7. Taskpane - Appears on the right side of the
screen by default, to quickly
perform searches, open or start
new document, and view the
contents of the clipboard and
format their documents.
8. Horizontal Scrollbar -
moves you to the left or right portion of the
document.
The vertical scrollbar - moves you to the
previous or to the next page of the document.
You can drag the vertical scroll bar to move to
different pages faster.

9. Cursor or Insertion Point -


is the blinking vertical line in the document
window that indicates where the next character
typed on the keyboard will appear.
10. Document Window -
Displays the document you're currently working
on.
11. Vertical and Horizontal Rulers -
Acts as guides when moving and aligning objects.

12. View Buttons - is used for to switch to different


document views
13. Status Bar -
indicates information about a command or
toolbar button, an operation in progress, or the
location of the insertion point.
14. Browse Button - makes navigation through a
document faster and easier

15. Window Control Menu Button -


is the Word icon on the left of the title bar :
it is one of the many ways you can
maximize,minimize, restore, close and
move the program window .
