RELATIVE PRONOUN

 RELATIVE PRONOUN adalah kata ganti untuk


membentuk relative clause (subordinate clause yang
menerangkan noun pada main clause suatu complex sentence). Di
dalam relative clause, relative pronoun dapat berfungsi
sebagai subject, object,
atau possessive dan tidak mewakili number (singular atau plural)
maupun gender (male atau female) dan posisi-posisi tersebut
(Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses. The
most common relative pronouns are who, whom,
whose, which, that. The relative pronoun we use
depends on what we are referring to and the
type of relative clause.)
JENIS JENIS
Kata benda disini bisa berupa manusia, hewan, atau barang.
1. That
 That sebagai kata ganti untuk orang dan benda sebagai
subject atau object untuk menjelaskan relative clause
(merupakan klausa yang penting untuk kalimat dan tidak
hanya sebagai penambahan info).
 That berfungsi netral bisa menggantikan
“who/which/whom”.
Contoh dalam kalimat:
 The person who bake a cake for me is my good friend.
 The person that bake a cake for me is my good friend
 The mobile phone which attracted me was foreign brand.
 The mobile phone that attracted me was foreign brand.
2. Which
Which berfungsi sebagai relative pronoun yang
menggantikan subject dan object yang berbentuk kata
benda selain manusia. Misalnya: kambing, batu,
meja, dll.
The bag is good looking. It is my cousin’s bag.
The bag which is good looking is my cousin’s bag.

3. Who
Who berfungsi sebagai relative pronoun menggantikan
subject orang bukan hewan atau lainnya.
Perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:
The man is my brother. He speaks English very
fluently.
The man who speaks English very fluently is my
brother.
4. Whom
Whom adalah relative pronoun yang digunakan untuk
menggantikan object yang berbentuk orang, bukan
hewan atau yang lainnya.
Contoh:
The child is eating in in the kitchen. His mother
loves him.
The child whom his mother loves is eating in
kitchen.

5. Whose
Whose adalah relative pronoun yang berfungsi
mengganti possessive pronoun (kata ganti
kepunyaan).
The man whose house you bought will go abroad.
EXERCISE
 I talked to the girl ......... car had broken down in front of the
shop.
 Mr Richards .........., is a taxi driver, lives on the corner.
 We often visit our aunt in Norwich ......... is in East Anglia.
 This is the girl ........ comes from Spain.
 That's Peter, the boy ......... has just arrived at the airport.
 Thank you very much for your e-mail ..... was very interesting.
 The man ........., father is a professor, forgot his umbrella.
 The children ........., shouted in the street, are not from our
school.
 The car ..........., driver is a young man, is from Ireland.
 What did you do with the money ......... your mother lent you?
ANSWER
 I talked to the girl whose car had broken down in front of the
shop.
