INTRODUCTION
• Waste-to-energy (WtE) or energy-from-waste (EfW) is the
process of generating energy in the form of electricity and/or
heat from the primary treatment of waste, or the processing of
waste into a fuel source
• WtE is a form of energy recovery.
• Most WtE processes generate electricity and/or heat directly
through combustion, or produce a combustible fuel commodity,
such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuels
• This study deals with estimation of the amount of solid waste
generated by a part of the Pune city by conducting visits on the
sites.
• The garbage has several nutrients, hence can be advantageously
processed to produce many bye products and end products viz.
gas, electricity and also organic manure which is highly suited
for organic farming.
• In this study an overview of the use of current waste to generate
electricity is proposed. Also, brief of various techniques to crates
by products manufactured from this waste will be proposed.
• Based on the energy potential available, the feasibility of energy
conversion through combustion of garbage using available waste
has been carried out.
• A Model to demonstrate the working of the process plant will be
presented
NEED OF STUDY
• Increases in our population and change in uptake patterns have
influenced waste composition and generation rate.
• There is a direct need to assess the total waste generation and
physical compositions, particle action etc to segregate the waste
in different forms.
• Also, in urban cities that are growing rapidly there is a problem
of land area for dumping wastes.
• Due to processing the wastes daily, the solid waste can be
managed on daily basis and efficiently.
• Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in one of the
major environment problems of mega cities.
• Various studies reveal that about 90% of MSW is disposed off
unscientifically in open dumps and landfills, creating problems
to public health and the environment.
• Rapid industrialization and population explosion in India has led
to the migration of people from villages to cities, generating
thousands of tons of MSW per day which is expected to increase
significantly in the near future, as the country is striving to attain
a status of industrialized nation by the year 2020.
