ROBOTICS
Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are general terms that imply the use of a
computer to model and replicate the intelligent behavior. Research in AI focuses on
the development and analysis of algorithms that learn and perform intelligent
behavior with minimal human intervention.

IMPACT ON
HUMAN LIFE
CONT…
Almost every aspect of modern human life
has been influenced by science and
technology. Starting from the smartphone
you hold in your hands to browse Facebook,
up to the smart house you live in, there is at
least two pieces of technology that as been
made use of. The field of science and
technology has advanced throughout the
past decades and has changed our
perspectives of life. Among those
advancements, robots have become
significant by trying to get close to human
lives. Though they have managed to solve
most of our day-to-day problems, they can
still create problems. First of all, let’s see the
bright side and then move on to the dark
side. 4
POSITIVE ASPECTS
There is always something good to
appreciate…
• Helping the Disabled
• Many robotic solutions have been
introduced during the past decades,
in order to help disabled
people. Disability robots have been
designed to help people recover
from certain disease conditions and
injuries. It is a broad field that
includes wheelchairs, robotic arms,
and many other robotic devices that
help disabled persons with their
day-to-day tasks
5
• Productive Work
• Many high end factories make use
of robots in order to make their
production lines more efficient
and time saving. These robots can
perform more accurate and high
quality work. Their quality build
ensures that they rarely make
mistakes and are more precise
than human workers. As long as
they have power, they can work
continuously without any pauses
or breaks and does not get tired as
humans.
6
• Medical Diagnosis:
• Some Artificial Intelligence
systems are used to support
the diagnosis. These systems do
not substitute doctors and
radiologists. They are rather used
as supporting tools to confirm
their assumptions/conclusions.

NEGATIVE
EFFECTS ON
HUMAN LIFE
• Lazy People
• People get robots to make their lives
easy. However, do they make us lazy?
People now-a-days hardly do any work
involving true manual labour. In the
modern context, there is less need for
people to move around. Intelligent
applications provide us with solutions
to buy everything we need online. We
can order all our groceries from online
stores, without having to walk to the
supermarket downtown. I’m not
suggesting that it is totally bad, but has
become responsible up to some extent
for making us sick with overweight,
diabetes and high blood pressure
9
• Overattachement
• Giants in the robotics industry such as
Japan and Korea, have started
building humanoid robots. They are
built in a manner to resemble the
human body.
• Creating robots to look and behave like
actual human beigns can motivate
people to develop emotions towards
these machines. This can promote trust
within users — but perhaps it can
create overtrust as well.
10
• Loss of Jobs
• Many companies and factories have
turned towards the use of robots in
their main processes as it is more cost
effective. Robots have already begun
replacing humans at an alarming rate.
This has threatened the job market and
has lead to downsizing of the
workforce. According to the findings of
the paper Robots and Jobs: Evidence
from US Labor Markets published by
the National Bureau of Economic
Research, each additional robot in the
US economy reduces employment by
5.6 workers, and every robot that is
added to the workforce per 1,000
human workers causes wages to drop
by as much as 0.25 to 0.5 percent.
