To Data Science and Analytics: Asst. Prof. Arturo J. Patungan JR

This document outlines an introductory course on data science and analytics. The 3-unit course will cover fundamentals, models, applications, advantages, and disadvantages. Students will learn data exploration, visualization, regression, classification, clustering, neural networks and sentiment analysis using R and other tools. Assessment includes tests, online activities, problem sets, and examinations. The course is divided into two grading periods each worth 50%, covering topics like linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, and clustering in the first period and clustering, dimensionality reduction, sentiment analysis, neural networks and support vector machines in the second. Students are expected to apply techniques to real-world data and summarize, visualize, and perform predictive and sentiment analyses.

Description:
This 3 – unit course deals with the fundamentals of data science and analytics, its
basis, models and applications in real life scenarios, its advantages and
disadvantages, as well as its positive and negative aspect.

The course provides the essentials of data science and analytics, covering a broad
selection of methodologies for working with data. Using R and other analytics
programming software, this course begins with data exploration and data
visualization, followed by regression and classification models, clustering techniques,
neural networks, and sentiment analysis.
Description:
At the end of the course, students are expected to apply
the different techniques in their field of study using real-
life data, where they can summarize, display
visualization of data, apply regression, classification and
clustering models to perform predictive and sentiment
analysis.

Classroom Rules and Policies
• During online sessions, students are expected to be answering the
online activity associated with the face-to-face meeting. Failure to
answer the online activity leads to a score of zero in that activity.
• Online activities are available during the day of the online session
ONLY.
• Maximum of 10 hours are allowed to be absent in a face – to – face
meetings and online sessions. Otherwise, a grade of FA (Failure due to
absences) will be given. Failure to submit online activity in the
“online” day will be considered merit an absence in the said date.
Classroom Rules and Policies
• Some face-to-face sessions require computers/laptop.
You should bring your own device (BYOD) and should
install a RapidMiner software that will be used in
performing modeling, data mining, and machine
learning.
• Intellectual honesty is strictly observed. Any form of
cheating is discourage and will have a corresponding
repercussion.
How to install RapidMiner to your device?
• Go to https://rapidminer.com/get-started.
• Enter your academic email (ust.edu.ph email address).
• Choose Academic/Research as your role.
• Choose Education Services as your Industry
• Click “Download”.
