Heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP) is used between drill collars and standard drill pipe. It has thicker walls than drill pipe, providing a smoother transition between drill string components and preventing buckling of drill pipe. HWDP comes in spiral designs, has the same outer diameter as drill pipe but smaller inner diameter, and is used in vertical and horizontal directional drilling applications.
