change?
Change is the process of
becoming different
SOCIAL CHANGE (Definition)

- refers to any significant alteration over time


in behavior patterns and cultural values and
norms of the people.
CULTURAL CHANGE (Definition)

- refers to the changes in the culture of


the society.

- is the modification or discontinuance of


existing “tried” and “tested” procedures
transmitted to us from the culture of the
past, as well as the introduction of new
procedures.
POLITICAL CHANGE (Definition)

- occurs when the rulers in acountry lose


power or the type of governance in the
country changes.

- may occur as initiated by the citizens


of the country (e.g. elections,
rebellion,
coup d’etat) or initiated by other countries .

CHARACTERISTIC OF SOCIAL CHANGE
1.SOCIAL CHANGE IS SOCIAL
social change obviously means a change in the system of
social relationships.
2. SOCIAL CHANGE IS UNIVERSAL
Social change occur in all societies no society remains static
for long time.
3. SOCIAL CHANGE OCCURS AS AN ESSENTIAL LAW
Social change is an unavoidable law of nature.
Our needs keep on changing to satisfy our desire for change
and to satisfy these needs, social change becomes a necessity.
4. SOCIAL CHANGE IS CONTINIOUS
• It is an “ongoing process”.
• Society is continuously changing since from the past up till
now.

1. INNOVATION
It refers to the use of new techniques to achieve
desired ends.
2. DIFFUSION
 Refers to transmission of cultural
characteristics or traits from the
common society to all other society.
• Innovation –social creation and institutionalization of
new ideas.
• Diffusion – spread of innovation from one social
group to another. • Assimilation – process where some
of the “majority community’s” cultural aspects are
absorbed in such manner that the home cultural
manner gets mitigated or lost.
• Social Contradictions and Tensions –inter-ethnic
conflicts, struggles, protests, social issues.
