MULTIPLE
SELVES
• Multiple selves varies across different
interpersonal and intrapersonal roles and
relationships, the attitude and characteristics
we show depends on who are the people we
are interacting with
• Having multiple personality or self makes it
hard for a person to achieve and show a
unified self.
UNIFIED
SELF
• Unified self is the personality that stays
within us, the self we usually only show to
people we trust and whenever we are
alone.
• it is important for a person to have a
consistent and coherent self that they show
to others, specially to people that are really
close to them.
MULTIPLE PERSONALITY
DISORDER OR DISSOCIATIVE
IDENTITY DISORDER
• Individuals radicate different personalities
within the same body, this is a worst case
since causes of this may include childhood
trauma and extreme emotional and sexual
abuse
• Multiplicity of self-states is an obvious
source of distress and maladaptive
behavior patterns
Some reasons why we have
multiple selves:
•Afraid of judgment of others
•Environment we are living in
•To adapt to the culture of the people
around us
•To fit in to a certain group of friends

• The false self exists so as to protect and
hide our true selves to strangers, to people
we just met and to people we want to
please
• The false self may also be termed as the
“ideal self” we have this image of who we
want to be as a person and sometimes, this
triggers us to portray the images inside our
heads
• For first meetings, we don’t usually show our real and
true selves, we do this to impress the people we just
met or to give them a good impression about
ourselves
• Adolescents develop different selves in various
relational contexts, it means that they form and
choose to show different personalities according to
whom they are interacting with
TRUE SELF
• True self may be termed as the
“actual self” oftentimes, we don’t
give attention to our lacking parts
that’s why we don’t realize they are
a part of our true selves
Why we don’t usually show our true
selves:
• To save ourselves from the judgment of others
• To protect ourselves from rejection
• To please others by our “ideal self”
FACTS:
• Our self esteem fluctuates day to day and hour to hour, on
some days, we wake up feeling great about ourselves and
what we have done the previous day and on some days, we
feel totally insecure of others. Our self esteem actually
depends on the internal and external feedback we get from
ourselves and from the environment
• Higher self esteem functions like an emotional immune
system, when our self esteem is higher, we are less affected by
stress and anxiety. We experience rejections and failures as
less hurtful and we recover from them more quickly

• “but the concept of self loses its meaning if a
person has multiple selves…the essence of self
involves integration of diverse experiences into
a unity.. In short, unity is one of the defining
features of selfhood and identity”
