SECTION
AMETHYST
An animal of a large group
distinguished by the possession of a back
bone or spinal column, including
mammals, birds , reptiles ,amphibians ,
and fishes.
Most vertebrates are sea and land
dwellers forming the large group of
chordates.
Vertebrates comprise all species of
animals within the subphylum
Vertebrata.
Vertebrates represent the
overwhelming majority of phylum
chordata.
WARM BLOODED ANIMALS

are animal species can maintain a body

temperature higher than their
environment.
 Mammals are vertebrate animals constituting
the class Mammalia, and characterized by the
presence of mammary glands which in females
produce milk for feeding their young, a
neocortex, fur, or hair and three middle ear
bones
 BIRDS also known as
Aves, are a group of
endothermic vertebrates,
characterised by feathers,
toothless, beaked jaws, the
laying of hard-shelled
eggs, a high metabolic
rate, four chamber heart,
and strong yet lightweight
skeleton.
 Fishes are vertebrates
found in salty, fresh,
cold even hot water.
Most have scales for
protection , paired fins
for movement and gills
for gas exchange. They
may lay eggs to
produce or give birth to
live young.
 Jawless fishes belong to class Agnatha.
Examples are the lampreys and hag fish.
Lampreys being parasites, have tooth- like
structures in their mouth that can attached to
bodies of their fishes and feed on their tissues
and blood.
 Cartilaginous fishes include the rays, skates,
and sharks.they have skeleton made of soft,
flexible protein material called cartillage.
 The diverse groups of bony fishes belongs to
Class osteichthyes. These are the fishes that
have an endoskeleton made of hard calcium
material called bone.
 Cold blooded creatures take on the
temperature of their surroundings. They are
hot when their environment is hot and cold
when environment is cold.
 In hot environments, cold-blooded animals can
have blood that is much warmer than warm-
blooded animals.
 Cold blooded animals are much more active in
warm environments and are very sluggish in
cold environments. This is because their
muscle activity depends on chemical reactions
which run quickly when it is hot and slowly
when it is cold.
 A cold blooded animal can convert much more
of its food into body mass compared with a
warm blooded animal.
 REPTILES – a vertebrate animal of a class
that includes snakes, lizards, crocodiles,
turtles, and tortoises. They are
distinguished by having a dry scaly skin
and typically laying soft-shelled eggs on
land.
A cold blooded vertebrate animal of a
class that comprisesthe frogs, toads,
newts, and salamanders. They are
distinguished by having an aquatic
gill-breathing larva stage followed by
a terrestrial lung-breathing adult stage
CHARACTERISTICS OF
VERTEBRATES ANIMALS
 These characteristics are only present during
embryonic development in some chordates.
 The notochord provides skeletal support, gives
the phylum its name, and develops into the
vertebral column in vertebrates.
 The dorsal hollow nerve cord develops into the
central nervous system: the brain and spine.
 Pharyngeal slits are openings in the pharynx
that develop into gill arches in bony fish and
into jaw and inner ear in terrestrial animals.
 The post anal tail is a skeletal extension of the
posterior end of the body, being absent in
humans and apes, although present during
embryonic development.
 JEAN B. LAMARCK – the famous french
natural scientist was the first to make use of
such a division of animals at the end of 18th
century.
 There are approximately 40,000 species of
vertebrates in the world, 484 of them have been
found on estonia.
 The distribution of estonian vertebrates is
following is following:
 fishes – 75 species
 Amphibians - 11 species
 Reptiles – 5 species
 Birds – 328 species
 Mammals – 65 species
 Blue whale is the largest vertebrates that can
grow to over 100 feet long and 400,000 pounds
 The smallest vertebrate is thought to be a tiny
frog called the paedophryne amauensis. It only
grows to about 0.3 inches long.
 The only mammals that lay eggs are
monotremes such as the platypus and spiny
anteater.
 There are reptiles that live on every continent
except Antarctica.
 Frogs can breathe through their skin.
 The shortest childhood of any mammal is
hooded seal. They are considered adults when
they are just four days old.
 Vertebrates tend to be much more intellegent
than invertebrates.
and this is all for today.....

thank you for your cooperation....

GOD BLESS US ALL!!!

 Most fish have skeletons made of bone, they
are called bony fish. Other fish have skeletons
made of cartillage. These include sharks and
rays.
