Asthma involves bronchospasm and inflammation of the airways. When antigens are inhaled, mast cells degranulate, releasing inflammatory mediators that cause bronchospasm and edema. An allergic reaction starts when an antigen presenting cell exposes an allergen to T-cells, activating B-cells to produce IgE antibodies against the allergen. On re-exposure, allergens bind these IgE antibodies on mast cells, triggering release of chemicals that dilate blood vessels and increase permeability, leading to inflammation. Common asthma triggers include allergens and irritants.
