STADIUM DEVELOPMENT
I.C.C.I. World cup cricket 2011 was to be hosted by india, bangkadesh, sri lanka.
Mumbai was selected to host the final,it was decided to Redevelop the wankhed to suit the mordern
facilities and Comfert.
While, redeveloping the wankhede stadium, the north end And the south end changes with better
facilities in terms Of bucket seating.
For the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), redeveloping the Wankhede Stadium up to
international standards was a non-negotiable aspect. It had to be since I had decided to host the
2011 World Cup Final there.
• The illumination requirement was finalised to galvanized polygonal stadium mast with highly
efficient 2 kW sports floodlight luminaire, which would ensure high-quality floodlighting and make
it suitable for HDTV transmission.
• With such a major upgrade in such a tight deadline, MCA turned to the masters in the
illumination business, Bajaj Electricals Ltd., for a game-changing assist.
• BEL brought in a specialised project execution team for this task. The entire project was further
segregated into two major blocks to simplify the complexity of the task at hand.
CHALLANGES
Lighting Design:
•Huge canopy obstructions over the spectator’s stand, which were a part of the renovation, led
to an enormous shadow being cast on the field of play (FOP) area
•Acute space constraint at the site led to asymmetrical location of all four masts. BEL had to
adhere to requirements of vertical illuminance level w.r.t. all camera locations, balancing
between vertical and horizontal illuminance level as well as providing proper uniformity level on
the playing arena
•Also, Bajaj had to restrict light spillage as there were residential properties nearby. Light
pollution was another aspect that had to be taken into consideration while executing the project
Project Execution:
•Acute space constraint for handling the erection of masts at designated locations
•No space for movement of crane for installing masts
•Near proximity of western railway high tension line to the masts. Several objections from
railway division for the same!
•No space for storing the material at site, resulting in unnecessary back and forth and the
timelines getting affected several times
PLUS POINTS
• Wankhede stadium is among worlds’ greatest 5 Cricket Stadiums.
• Whole roof is supported on large cantilever pipe trusses covered with teflon sheets.
• Stadium have biggest dressing room than any other Stadiums.
• There is special arrangement for broadcasting screens.
• Special arrangementfor cameras, broadcasting units and press box.
• Stadium serves food at every level of each stand.

ROAD
MCA Pavilion
It pays to find a seat at the MCA Pavilion. Thronged by youngsters who spend more time watching who’s walking up and down the
dressing room stairs, this enclosure is a selfie-seeker’s delight. Who knows, Rohit Sharma could be in the mood to oblige you! That’s not all.
The MCA Pavilion offers a fantastic view and is usually occupied by ‘cricket people’.
Grand Stand
Right above the bowler’s arm: that’s how simply one can explain the view from the top tier of the Grandstand. Situated on top of the
dressing rooms, it is where you want to be. Watch out for the straight hits over the sight screen
Garware Pavilion
was being built in 1974, the Garware Group of Industries had contributed a whopping Rs 12 lakh to the cause. And the Mumbai Cricket
Association rightly honoured its benefactors. It is arguably the most high-profile pavilion at the Wankhede, replete with a grand entrance.
The Wankhede also houses the Garware Club House, a recreational facility to the who’s who of the city. If you ever meet the gift fairy, ask
her for a ticket to the Garware Pavilion. You’ll love the experience
Vijay Merchant Pavilion
Sunil Gavaskar Stand, and named after the founder of the Bombay School of Batsmanship, the Vijay Merchant Pavilion is also known as the
‘West Stand’. Some of the seats here are reserved for the members of the three original gymkhanas of Mumbai: PJ Hindu, Islam and Parsi
