A Man Young and Old : Human Dignity
by William Buttler Yeats

Like the moon her kindness is

lf kindness l may call
What has no comprehension in’t
But is the same for all
As though my sorrow were a scene
Upon a painted wall
So like a bit of stone l lie
Under a broken tree
l could recover if l shrieked
My heart’ agony
To passing bird, but l am dumb
From human dignity
• A simile is a figure of speech in which two quite different things are
compared because they appear to be similar in at least one
characteristics.
• lf you say,”Cat’s eyes are like marbles”,it doesn’t mean that you
believe that you believe that cat’s eyes and marbles are really alike.
But the glassy shine of the cat’s ayes reminds you of the glassy shine
and the comparison helps to make a picture in words.
• Similes are particularly effective in literature , especially in poetry
