MODULE 3:
ISSUES ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
At the end of this lesson, you should be able
to take an informed stand/position on the
three (3) issues on development.
ACTIVITY
• The class will be divided into six (6) groups and each
will be assigned a topic/issue one week before the
scheduled debate. Read and understand your assigned
topic.

• Group 1 and Group 2 will be assigned nature and


nurture, respectively; Group 3 and Group 4, continuity
and discontinuity; and Group 5 and 6, stability and
change.
ACTIVITY
• In class, the groups have to argue and defend their
assigned topic so that group 1 debates with group 2
(nature vs. nurture), group 3 debates with group 4 (
continuity vs. discontinuity), and group 5 debates with
group 6 (stability vs. change).

• Each pair of debating groups will be given 10-15


minutes to convince the class about their stand. After
all the presentations, the whole class gathers for
discussion.

1. Work with a partner and write your answers on one whole sheet of paper.
2. Complete the sentence. With regard to the nature-nurture, continuity-
discontinuity, and change-stability controversies, the wiser stand is
_______________________________.
3. Read the article titled “How the First Nine Months Shape the Rest of Your Life”
from the October 4, 2010 Issue of Time Magazine, and answer the following
questions:
a) Does the article agree that heredity, environment and individual’s choice are the
factors that contribute to what a person may become? Write the paragraph that
tells so.
b) Read the 4th paragraph again. Focus your attention on the highlighted word
PERMANENTLY. Relate this to the issue on stability versus change issue. Does the
word PERMANENTLY convince you that we are what our first experiences have
made of us (stability)? Explain your answer.
