Major Project: "Design and Optimization of Shell-Tube and Plate-Fin Heat "

The document discusses optimizing the design of shell-tube and plate-fin heat exchangers using a hybrid of two evolutionary algorithms. It introduces the Falcon Optimization Algorithm and Cohort Intelligence algorithm, and describes how shell-tube and plate-fin heat exchangers work. The literature review covers previous uses of the two algorithms. The project aims to hybridize FOA and CI for heat exchanger design optimization, minimizing cost and maximizing effectiveness through the new hybrid algorithm. As the project only involves computational analysis, it has no monetary cost.

“Design and optimization of shell-tube and plate-fin heat

exchangers using hybridization of two evolutionary algorithms”
INTRODUCTION:
▫ Optimization is about the search for the best possible solution (or a set of
solutions in multi-objective optimization), or trade-off solutions, for a given
problem with or without constraints. Nature-/bio-inspired optimization
techniques such as Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), Swarm Intelligence (SI),
etc. have been developed.
▫ In recent times a new algorithm (population-based) is developed based on
the hunting behaviour of falcons called Falcon Optimization Algorithm
(FOA).
▫ Yet, the combination of metaheuristic optimization with gradient-based
methods may lead to high-efficiency techniques as well. Metaheuristic
algorithms have shown to be promising alternatives for solving
optimization problems.
Heat Exchangers:

▫ A shell and tube heat exchanger is a class of heat exchanger designs. It is the
most common type of heat exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical
processes and is suited for higher-pressure applications.

▫ The plate-fin heat exchanger is widely used in many industries, including the
aerospace industry for its compact size and lightweight properties, as well as in
cryogenics where its ability to facilitate heat transfer with small temperature
differences is utilized.
Literature Review:
4

• The inspiration of FOA was the hunting behaviour of falcons when they are
pursuing prey in flight. Falcons are solitary and their strategy of the hunt is based
on its needs, however, these strategies follow some patterns being the principal of
them the rules of flight.
• Cohort Intelligence (CI) inspired by the candidates’ self-supervised learning
behaviour in a cohort. The cohort here refers to a group of candidates interacting
and competing with one another to achieve some individual goal which is
inherently common to all the candidates. When working in a cohort, every
candidate tries to improve its behaviour by observing the behaviour of every other
candidate in that cohort. Every candidate may follow a certain behaviour in the
cohort which according to itself may result in improvement in its behaviour. The
cohort could be assumed to become successful when for a considerable number
of times the cohort behaviours saturate to the same behaviour.
Hybridization:
▫ What is hybridization?
- A method to combine two algorithms in-order to achieve more optimum results.
▫ Why do we need to hybridize the algorithm?
- To modify a population-based algorithm(FOA) by compiling with socio-inspired
algorithm(CI) for optimization of selected objective function.

▫ How to hybridize the following algorithms?

- We already have the algorithms of two methods from our references. Now, we have
to pursue study on methods to achieve hybridization.

▫ Since above both algorithm are on same base line, it is not difficult to hybridize the
algorithms.

Objectives of the project:
▫ Design optimization of heat exchanger.

▫ Cost minimisation.

▫ To increase the effectiveness of heat exchanger.

Project’s cost:
▫ The project acquire no amount, since it is totally based on computational analysis
and doesn’t requires any testing on practical model.
