Partitive Proportion Problems

This document discusses ratios, proportions, and solving problems involving partitive proportions. It provides examples of setting up ratios using blocks and calculating unknown values based on the total and given ratios. One example problem asks how many mango trees there are if the ratio of mango to avocado trees is 4:3 and there are 42 avocado trees. The answer is provided that there are 56 mango trees. Another example asks how many chickens Mang Lando has if the ratio of ducks, chickens, and turkeys is 4:2:3 and the total is 270. The answer is that he has 60 chickens.

two quantities. Who
2. 32 ÷ 8 = 4 am i? RATIO

3. 105 ÷ 5 = 21
I am a statement of equality
4. 108 ÷ 9 = 12 between two ratios.

Let us recall… ( DIRECT PROPORTION )
In Mr. Romero’s orchard, the ratio of mango trees to

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING PARTITIVE
PROPORTION
In Partitive proportion, a whole number is divided into parts
that is proportional to the given ratio.
Example 1.
Ana saved P105 from her weekly allowance. She
shared it to her younger brother and sister in a
ratio of 2:3. How much did each of them get?
We need to
Brother P21 P21 distribute P105
P105 equally into each
Sister P21 P21 P21 block

Brother P42 We need to divide

P105 by 5 blocks.
Sister P63 So, P105 ÷ 5 = P21
Example 2.
The ratio of boys to girls in Grade 6 Aries is 3:5.
There are 40 pupils in the class. How many boys
are there in the Grade 6 Aries? Answer: 15
Boys 5 5 5
40 pupils
Girls 5 5 5 5 5

We need to distribute 40
equally into each block

We need to divide 40 by
Boys 15 8 blocks. So, 40 ÷ 8 = 5
Girls 25
Example 3.
Mang Lando is raising ducks, chickens, and turkeys
in a ratio of 4:2:3. When he counted his animals, it
totaled 270. How many chicken has Mang Lando?
Ducks 30 30 30 30

Chickens 30 30 270

We need to distribute 270

Turkeys 30 30 30
equally into each block

We need to divide 270 by

What is asked in 9 blocks. So, 270 ÷ 9 = 30
the problem?
Answer: 60 chickens
30 + 30 = 60
Example 4.
The Grade 6 Virgo collected plastic bottles for their fund raising project.
Ans. 96
The boys collected 3 plastic bottles for every 5 plastic bottles that the girls
collected. After a month, the girls collected 24 more bottles than the boys. bottles
How many bottles were collected in all?
Who collected more bottles?
Using blocks, the ratio will be…
Girls
Boys 12 12 12 By how much?
24 bottles
Girls 12 12 12 12 12
In the given ratio,
So, we need to put equally
24 bottles into 2 blocks.
24 ÷ 2 = 12 how many more
blocks are there for
the girls than boys?
Boys: 12 + 12 + 12 = 36 bottles
Girls: 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 60 bottles

What is asked in the problem? 36 + 60 = 96 bottles

GROUP ACTIVITY 1

The ratio of math books to English books is 2:3. If

the sum of these books is 165, how many books
of each kind are there?
We need to
math 33 33 distribute P105
165 equally into each
English 33 33 33 block

math 66 We need to divide

165 by 5 blocks.
English 99 So, 165 ÷ 5 = 33
GROUP ACTIVITY 2
The ratio of guava trees and avocado trees in the orchard
is 3:5. If the sum of these trees is 120, how many guava
trees are there in the Grade 6 Aries? Answer: 15

guava 15 15 15
120 trees
avocado 15 15 15 15 15

We need to distribute
120 equally into each
Guava 45 block
We need to divide 120 by
Avocado 75 8 blocks. So, 120 ÷ 8 = 15

Linggo ng Wika Program is 4:2:3. If their total is 162,
How many Grade 6 learners are attending the program?

Grade 4 18 18 18 18

Grade 5 18 18 162

We need to distribute 162

Grade 6 18 18 18
equally into each block

We need to divide 162 by

What is asked in 9 blocks. So, 162 ÷ 9 = 18
the problem?
Answer: 54 Grade 6 learners
18 + 18 + 18 = 54
