Properties of Addition & Multiplication
1. Commutative Property – changing the order of the
addends/factors does not affect the sum/product
3+4=4+3 2x4=4x2
7 = 7 8 = 8
2. Associative Property – changing the grouping of the
addends/factors does not affect the sum/ product
(2 + 4) + 6 = 2 + (4 + 6) (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4)
6 + 6= 6 + 6 6 x 4 = 2 x 12
12 = 12 24 = 24
Properties of Addition & Multiplication

3. Identity Property
Zero Property of Addition- Any number added to zero is equal to the
number itself.
(5-5) + 24 = 24 158 + 0 = 158
*Zero is the identity element of addition
Identity Property of Multiplication
-Any number multiplied to 1 is equal to the number itself.
*One is the identity element of multiplication
16 123 x 1 =16 123 452 x (16-15) = 452
452 x 1
Properties of Addition & Multiplication

4. Distributive Property of Multiplication over

Addition
- Breaking apart one of the factors does not
change the product
2 x 8 = 2 x ( 5 + 3) = (2 x 5) + (2 x 3)
16 = 16 = 10 + 6
35 x 8 = (30 + 5) x 8
= (30 x 8) + (5 x 8)
280 = 240 + 40
II. State the properties used and give the
result of the equation as well
Result Property
1. 0 + 85 85 Zero Prop. of Add.

2. 8 x(25-19) = (8x25)-(8x19) 48 DPMS

3. 14 344 x 1 14 344 Identity Prop. of Mult.

4. (14+ 36) +11 = 14+(36+11) 61 Associative PA

150 – 126 = 24
5 +3 = 8 24 ÷ 8 = 3 wrong
answers 10

by checking: ( 5 x 27) – (3 x 3) = 135 – 609

= 126 points
2. Area(lawn) = 80 x 60 =4 800 sq. meters
10 80

80 + 20 = 100 60 + 20 = 80
Area(Pavement)= (100 x 80) – 4800
