Planning by Supervisor

THE
SUPERVISOR
AND
PLANNING

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 3

Planning is an essential
part of all management
work.
The supervisor must
look ahead and anticipate
the manner in which he
will use all the resources,
facilities, people, and
talents under his
direction.

What will
happen if we
don’t plan?

What is Planning?
Planning has to do
with studying all
the factors in a
business situation
and arranging them
so that desired
results can be
achieved.

Planning
vs.
Procedure
9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 7
The procedure shows how the plan will
be implemented in terms of how, what,
where, when, and who.

Planning is the process of thinking about

the activities required to achieve a desired
goal. It is the first and foremost activity
to achieve desired results.
Characteristics
of a Planner
1. Ordering: - The ability
to deal with seemingly
unrelated data in such
a way that things are
grouped together.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 10

2. Elaboration
-the essential
elements of a plan
may be rather simple
and may be stated
concisely.

3. Perceptual foresight
-patterns of action or
idea development are
always readily
discernible from data.

4. Conceptual foresight
- some people tend to
see things, events, and
situations in detail;
others see over all needs,
consequences, essences,
and values

5. Originality
-if often takes originality
or creativity to use
established knowledge or
knowledge or experience
to create new patters of
thought or action.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 14

6. Fluency of Ideas
-the planner must
possess and develop
a large fund of
ideas. Everything in
life begins with an
idea.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 15

7. Judgment
-Planners have to be
able to distinguish
between the
important and the
unimportant.

What Should
Be Planned?

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 17

1. Objectives
-it is difficult to hit a
target unless you can see
it or know where it is
located.
2. Controls
-controls have to do with
the use of measurement
which tell us how we are
doing in relation to our
Objectives.30

3. Delegations
- We cannot place
responsibilities on the
shoulders of subordinates
without considering their
capacities, the degree of
supervision required, and
the controls which will tell
us how well delegations
are being discharged.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 19

4. Communications
-In order to
coordinate the
activities of a group
it is necessary that
proper
verbal, written, and
visual
communications be
planned.
9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 20
5. Resources
-every organization is
a veritable goldmine
of resources. Too
often the supervisor
overlooks or doesn’t
use the resources
which are available to
him.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 21

6. Methods and
Procedures -there is no
one best way of doing
anything.
There may be methods
that are best for a given
time but simple changes
in job specifications may
require changes in
method.
9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 22
7. Manpower
-job studies will
show the amount
of manpower
required to
perform given
jobs.

9/16/2019 Prepared by: K. S. Patil 23

8. Equipment
-every worker must be
provided with the tools
required by his job.
Such tools include
machines as well as
the miscellaneous
collection of gadgets
which workers need.
