three objectives of

physical fitness
fitness

• — includes developing muscle strength,

endurance, flexibility and agility

• —example, throwing and hitting balls exercises

various muscles, track running improves heart
health and aerobics increases lung capacit
character

• —encourages participants to work as

components of a team, showing them how to
successfully work together to reach a goal

• —a sense of fair play is fostered as well as an

awareness of and sensitivity toward others.
skills

• —many skills are learned during physical

education classes, including how to position
the body for various sporting activities, how to
keep safe when stretching the body to its limits
and how to mentally prepare for sporting
events
major components of
physical fitness:
health related
cardiovascular endurance

• — the ability to do moderately strenuous activity over

a period of time. It reflects how well your lungs and
heart work together to supply oxygen to your body
during exertion and exercise; aerobic fitness

• — examples would be jogging, cycling and swimming

• — the Cooper Run is used most often to test

cardiovascular endurance
muscular strength

• — the ability of a muscle to exert or release force by

contraction enabling a person to overcome resistance or to
act against resistance

• — can be gained through two types of training, resistance

and weight

• — the push up test is most often used to test muscular

strength

• — it is possible to have muscular strength in one area while

lacking strength in another
muscular endurance
• — the ability of the muscles to perform continuously without
fatigue; it is the product of all psychic and physical energy of
human body

• — the ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeat a

movement many times or to hold a particular position for an
extended period of time

• — both aerobic and anaerobic exercises can improve muscular

endurance

• — training consists of performing low- to medium-intensity

exercise for an extended period of time like cycling, step
machines and elliptical machines
body composition

• — amount of fat mass compared to lean muscle mass, bone

and organs

• — the proportion of fat in your body compared to your

bones and muscle; it does not refer to your weight in
pounds or your figure

• — can be measured using underwater weighing, Skinfold

readings, and bioelectrical impedance
flexibility

• — the ability of a muscle to perform movements with large

range of motion and the ability of each joint to move through
the available range of motion

• — being flexible is important in almost every sport.

Stretching regularly is the best way to improve flexibility;
stretching should not hurt.

• — is important in physical exercise because it allows you to

have a better performance when playing sports or doing an
exercise.
major components of
physical fitness:
skill related
speed

• — the ability of a person to execute motor

movements with high speed in the shortest
period of time

• — speed = distance covered / time

• — involved in most of the athletic skills such as
sprint running, football, and basketball
power

• — the ability of the muscle to release maximum

force in the shortest period of time

• — power = force x speed

• — it is measured and exemplified by activities or

movements of an “explosive” nature, such as
vertical jump, the shot put, the ball throw, etc
coordination

• — the ability to use your senses and different

parts of your body to perform motor tasks
accurately and smoothly

• — involves the nervous system and the skeletal-

muscular system and may be defined as the
smooth flow of movement in the execution of a
motor task
agility

• — the ability of a person to change positions in space or to

change directions quickly and effectively

• — e.g. basketball player doing a crossover, hurdle crossing

over the barrier

• — common test of this parameter involves such tasks as

the zigzag run for time through a maze of obstacles
balance

• — the ability of a person to control human body

or to maintain equilibrium under static and
dynamic conditions

• — the balance bracelet has been known to help

with equilibrium in intense situations

• — common test involve the use of balance beam

• three kinds of balance:

• — static balance: fixed position

• — dynamic balance: while moving

• — rotational balance: after turning, rolling, or other

maneuvers while on contact with the floor or apparatus
reaction time

• — the ability to respond quickly to stimulus

• — the length of time required to initiate a response to
a specific stimulus

• — essential for a good shortstop in softball, a

karatesta, the wrestler, the fencer, etc
importance and benefits
main benefits:
• Condition of heart and lungs by increasing the oxygen available
to the body therefore enabling the heart to use oxygen more
efficiently.

• Development of physical fitness components such as strength,

endurance, agility, flexibility, etc and improvement of muscle
tone.

• Fosters correct posture, figure, body image, and physical

appearance.

• Quick recovery after injury, illness and decreased the risk of

cardiovascular diseases.

• Reduces and controls body fat, exercise combines with a proper

diet will reduce body fat and also fulfill proper nutritional
requirement.
• Increase energy level of a person and helps maintain ideal
body weight.

• Through Participation in physical fitness program, leisure (free)

time is properly utilized.

• Improve mood and reduce depression and anxiety.

• Postpone fatigue and reduces recovery time after vigorous

activity.

• Helps people to meet challenges of life, make them self

confident, and postpone aging process.
benefits:

• vitality: fit muscles use less energy to perform the same tasks,
leading to an increase in vitality

• posture: a physically fit person is able to maintain his general

posture alignment better than one with weak musculature

• relieves low back pain: a lack of physical activity has been

found out to be one of the major causes of lower back pain

• retards aging process: postpones deterioration usually taking

place as a person ages
• physical fitness and ability to meet emergencies: a body that is
accustomed to sedentary living habits can usually operate
ineffectively

• neuromuscular skill: the smooth, efficient, coordination of the

muscular system is improved as a result of regular participation in
physical activities

• relaxation: overactive minds in under active bodies often need

physical outlets for accumulated emotional and muscular tension

• improvement of personality and social skills: participation in

games and sports aid in improving the personality and in
developing the desirable social skills

• mental fitness: because of the mental and physical relaxation that

ofteb results from physical activity
