Gen. Math 1

The document defines key terms related to functions including relation, function, vertical line test, domain, and piecewise function. It provides examples of each term to illustrate functions and how they can represent real-life situations. Groups will work on portraying relationships they see in society and determining whether they represent functions. They will then present their examples to the class.

MARY ANN CECILIO

OBJECTIVE:
The learner represents real-
life situations using functions,
including piecewise
functions.
DIRECTION:
Identify the following
terms defined in each
number.
1. It is a rule that relates
values from a set of values
called domain to a second
set of values called the
range.
2. It is a relation where
each element in the
domain is related to only
one value in the range by
some rule.
3. It is a test which states
that a graph represents a
function if and only if each
vertical line intersects the
graph at most once.
4. It is the set of all
possible values that the
variable x can take.
5. It is a type of function
that is defined by atleast
two equations, each of
which applies to a different
part of domain.
1. It is a rule that relates
values from a set of values
called domain to a second
set of values called the
range.
RELATION
2. It is a relation where
each element in the
domain is related to only
one value in the range by
some rule.
FUNCTION
3. It is a test which states
that a graph represents a
function if and only if each
vertical line intersects the
graph at most once.
VERTICAL LINE TEST
4. It is the set of all
possible values that the
variable x can take.

DOMAIN
5. It is a type of function
that is defined by atleast
two equations, each of
which applies to a different
part of domain.
PIECEWISE FUNCTION
The class will be divided into five
groups. Each group will be given 5
minutes to prepare and determine
relationships between people that you can
see within the society then portray it to
class.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What did you portray about?
2. Do you often see it in the
society?
3. Is this relation a function?
Are all relation a function?
4. When can we say that a
function is a relation? Or it is
only a relation and not a
function?

5. Are all function a relation?

RELATION
It is a rule that relates values from
a set of values called domain to
a second set of values called the
range.
It is a set of ordered pair (𝒙, 𝒚)
FUNCTION
 It is a relation where each element in the
domain is related to only one value in the
range by some rule.
 It is a set of ordered pairs (𝒙, 𝒚) such that
no two ordered pairs have the same x-
value but different y-values.
 Using functional notation, we can write
𝒇 𝒙 =𝒚
Illustration of functions
1.Setof ordered pairs
2.Mapping or arrow

Set of ordered pair (𝒙, 𝒚)
𝒇 = 𝟐, 𝟓 , 𝟑, 𝟔 , 𝟔, 𝟗 , (𝟕, 𝟖)
where:
x-First element
Independent variable
Domain
y- Second element
Dependent variable
Range
EXAMPLE:

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING

RELATIONS ARE FUNCTIONS?
1. 𝒇 = 𝟏, 𝟐 , 𝟐, 𝟑 , 𝟑, 𝟓 , (𝟒, 𝟕)

FUNCTION
2. 𝒈 = 𝟏, 𝟑 , 𝟏, 𝟒 , 𝟐, 𝟓 , (𝟑, 𝟕)

NOT A FUNCTION
3.
𝐡= 𝟏, 𝟑 , 𝟐, 𝟔 , 𝟑, 𝟗 , … , 𝒏, 𝟑𝒏 , …

FUNCTION
Mapping diagrams.

`-elements in the domain are

mapped to the elements of
the range using arrows.

Graphing
Vertical line Test
It is a test which states that
a graph represents a function
if and only if each vertical
line intersects the graph at
most once.
DOMAIN
It is the set of all possible
values that the variable x
can take.
Identify the domain for each
relation using the set builder
notation
1.𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏 {𝑥: 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ}
2. 𝒚 = 𝒙 − 𝟐𝐱 + 𝟐 {𝑥: 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ}
𝟐

3. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏 {𝑥: 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ, −1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1}
4. 𝒚 = 𝒙 + 𝟏 {𝑥: 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ, 𝑥 ≥ −1}
𝟐𝒙+𝟏
5. 𝒚 = {𝑥: 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ, 𝑥 ≠ 1}
𝒙−𝟏
Functions as
representations of
Real-life situations
1. Give a function C that
can represent the cost of
buying x meals. If one meal
costs ₱40.
2. One hundred meters costs of fencing is
available to enclose a rectangular area next to a
river. Give a function A that can represent the
area that can be enclosed, in terms of x.
 Some situations can only be described by more
than one formula, depending on the value of the
independent variable.

Piecewise functions
It is a type of function that is defined
by atleast two equations, each of which
applies to a different part of domain.
“piece by piece”
Examples
1. A user is charged ₱300 monthly for a
particular mobile plan, which includes 100
free text messages. Messages in excess of
100 are charged ₱1 each. Represent the
monthly cost for text messaging using the
function 𝒕 𝒎 , where 𝒎 is the number of
messages sent in a month
A jeepney ride costs ₱8.00 for the
first 4 kilometers, and each additional
integer kilometer adds ₱1.50 to the fare.
Use a piecewise function to represent
the jeepney fare in terms of the distance
(d) in kilometers.
