Principles of Morality
WHAT IS MORALITY?
Panizo (1964)- refers to “the quality
of human acts by which we can call
them right or wrong, good or evil.”
Your human actions is right when
conforms with the norm, rule, or law
of morality. Otherwise it is said to be
wrong.
Meaning of Foundational Moral
Principle
Principle comes from the latin worf
“princeps” means a beginning, a source.
It is something that is based, founded,
originated and initiated.
FMP is a universal norm upon which all
the other principles on the rightness or
wrongness of an action based. It is the
source of morality.
Where is this Foundational

• Cognitive Dimension-
we must understand the
value that we want to
acquire
Three Dimensions of VALUES:
• Affective Dimension- “it is not
enough to know what is honesty
or why one should be honest.
One has to feel something
towards honesty, be moved
towards honesty as preferable
to dishonesty.” (Aquino, 1990)
Three Dimensions of VALUES:
• Behavioral Dimension-
living by the value is the
true acid test if we really
value a value like
honesty.
Value formation is
a training on the
intellect and will.
• INTELLECT
The intellect discerns a
value and presents it to
the will as a right or
wrong value.
• WILL
Wills to act on the right
value and wills to avoid
the wrong value presented
by your intellect.
Develop
INTELLECT in
Three Functions:
1. Formation
of Ideas
2. Judgment
3. Reasoning
Virtuous versus vicious
life and their effect on
the will.
A virtuous life strengthens you to
live by the right values and live a
life of abundance and joy. A vicious
life lead you to perdition and
misery.
1. PLEASURE Values:
- Refers to the modes of the
feelings that happens to an
individual. Sensible feelings
manifest in relative modes
of joy and suffering.
2. VITAL Values
-Values pertaining to the
well being of either
individual or the
community.
Spend it passionately in
teaching, the most noble
profession.
