Major Considerations for Photos

Cutline - Without any additional information you would be left

wondering the meaning of the photo and what action is taking place.
As we know, pictures themselves tell stories. But cutlines help fill in
the “who, what, where and when.”

Stand-alone Photos - Stand alones are high quality images that tell
a story without an accompanying article. They receive a full cutline, a
small headline called a catchline, and are often boxed to separate
them from other elements on a page.

Cutline typeface - The typeface used for cutlines depends largely

on the typeface used in the story text. Cutlines should contrast with
any nearby text. To make sure this difference is clear, most
publications use a typeface opposite that of the text.

Cutline placement - Cutlines can rest below the photos and or

beside the photos. In some publications you may find cutlines that
rest between photos. However, this should be avoided because it
makes readers work too hard. These are called gang cutlines. In
general, each photo should have its own cutline.

This cutline rests below the photo. It is probably the most common way to place a
cutline. Notice the cutline is flush with both edges of the photo. It should not extend
past the edges.

White space is the area between design elements. It is also

the space within individual design elements, including the
space between typography glyphs (readable characters).

Despite its name, white space does not need to be white. It

can be any color, texture, pattern, or even a background
image.
White Spaces
White space can cause problems between designers and
clients. Design theory promotes the use of white space for
elegance and ensuring a quality user experience. Sadly,
many clients and managers consider white space wasted
space. They think it could be used to house more information
or other visual elements.

There are no standards to which an article length adheres.

However, when it comes to making the page still pleasing to
the eye, some articles are being cut and continued to another
page, so as to make room for other elements of the
newspaper.

the “fence” of the rectangle, while the story itself is wrapped
