• PROFIBUS standard EN 50170 is open and independent from

supplier
• Standard is valid in 18 European countries and is used world
wide
• PROFIBUS International supports IEC standardization
• PROFIBUS products:

• Sertification:
– PROFIBUS user organization has created an sertification system
and test fuctions (EN 45000)
– Sertificated products are compatible
– All sertificated products have sertification numbers

PROFIBUS 3(3)

• PROFIBUS fieldbus has three (3) compatible data transfer

solutions:
– PROFIBUS-DP: for production automation fast, easy to use, cheap
– PROFIBUS-PA: for process industry, can be used in EX -locations
– PROFIBUS-FMS: for general use, multi-master communication
between intelligent devices (e.x PLC)

PROFIBUS _FIELDBUS COMMUNICATION 1(2)

• Bus master defines when slave device can transmit

information
• Only one device at the time has permission to
transmit
• Two (2) methods:
– Token-Passing between Master devices
– Master-Slave between master and slave devices (comp.
Bitbus)

• Low speed (H1), IEC 1158-2

– Speed 31,25 kBit/s
– Suitable for EX locations
– Power feed for modules from the bus (two wires for data
and power)
– Pair cable (shielded or non-shielded)
– Max. lenght 1900 m/segment, with repeaters max. 10 km
– 10…32 units in a segment depending on EX classification
and needed power supply for the device
– Bus segment is connected to the DP -bus with DP/PA
coupler or DP/PA link

– Passive devices, Slave (e.x. I/O units, drives)
• Transmission speed:
– Is determined by slowest connected device
– In same network all devices have same speed
– from 9,6 kbit/s up to 12 Mbit/s

• Wide range of products and devices

• 244 bytes input and output data for one module
• 3584 bytes input and output data for one bus
• Normally one master bus
• 1…125 Slave devices and 1 Master device (FC) in the
bus
• Is constructed from segments: maximum of 32
devices in one segment (segment = PROFIBUS
fieldbus terminated with terminal resistors)

• Based on extended PROFIBUS-DP protocol and
IEC 1158-2 data transfer
• Replaces currently used 4…20 mA technique
• Suitable for EX -locations
• Is connected to PROFIBUS-DP with link or coupler
– Link requires a bus address
– Coupler does not require bus address in DP-bus
• Bus speed is fixed 31,25 kbit/s

– Supported data transmission speeds
– Supported message lengths

FIELDBUS INTERFACE
• Two independent fieldbus interfaces
• Implementation gives possibility to integrate many
different fieldbuses based on different fieldbus
standards

• One FC can in total handle even 250 fieldbus devices

PROFIBUS Configuration (1)

• Definition phases for PROFIBUS fieldbus devices

– Installing the software:
• VSYS, Design Module (DM), Fieldnet Builder, HONEYWELL
Files,and Device support blocks (specific for the fieldbus
devices used in the project).
– Creating the application:
• The application can be configured for each project
– Configuring the fieldbus devices for the fieldbus:
• Definitions made by the Fieldnet Builder program.
– Connecting the application and the fieldbus devices:
• Definitions made by the System Builder.
