*TELL WHETHER THE
FOLLOWING SITUATION
SHOWS A UNIFORM ON NON-
UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION:
*A roller coaster on a 360°
loop.

*NON-UNIFORM CIRCULAR
MOTION
*A satellite moving in outer
space orbiting the earth.

*UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION

*A car rounding a curve with
constant radius at constant
speed.

*UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION

*An ice skater skating in a
circle with constant speed.

*UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION

*Earth’s revolution around
the sun.

*NON-UNIFORM CIRCULAR
MOTION
*Uniform circular motion -
*When a particle or object moves
in a circle with constant speed.

*Non-uniform circular motion -

*When a particle or object moves
in a circle with varying speed.
*A CIRCULAR MOTION HAS ITS
QUANTITIES SUCH AS
*TANGENTIAL VELOCITY
*CENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION
*TANGENTIAL ACCELERATION
*RADIUS OF CURVATURE
*TANGENTIAL VELOCITY
- It is the velocity of the moving particle tangent to
the circular path.

*RADIUS OF CURVATURE
- It is the distance of the moving particle to the
center.
*TANGENTIAL VELOCITY *RADIUS OF CURVATURE
In a time T (the time for one revolution or one
complete trip around the circle) the particle
travels a distance equal to the circumference of
the circle, so its speed is

Where: R = distance from

the center
T = period or time to
complete one cycle
*CENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION
- The word “centripetal” is derived from two Greek
words meaning “seeking the center.”

- It is the acceleration of the moving particle towards

the center.
*CENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION

*TANGENTIAL ACCELERATION
- It is the acceleration that is parallel to the
instantaneous velocity.

- Tangential acceleration zero in a uniform circular

motion

- It is the rate of change in velocity per change in time

*Example Problem

AnAston Martin V8 Vantage sports car has a “lateral

acceleration” of 0.96g = (0.96)(). This is the maximum
centripetal acceleration the car can sustain without
skidding out of a curved path. If the car is traveling at a
constant 40 m/s (about 89 mi/h, or 144km/h) on level
ground, what is the radius R of the tightest unbanked
curve it can negotiate?
*Seatwork

Passengers on a carnival ride move at constant speed in

a horizontal circle of radius 5.0 m, making a complete
circle in 4.0 s. Find the tangential velocity, centripetal
acceleration, tangential acceleration, and radius of
curvature.
