ARCHES
An arch is a curved structure that spans a space and
may or may not support weight above it.
First appeared in 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian
brick architecture.
Firstly used by the Ancient Romans in systematic way.

2. Voussoir 6. Rise
3. Extrados 7. Clear span
4. Impost 8. Abutment
TYPES OF ARCHES
• Arches have many forms, but all falls under 3 basic
categories: circular, pointed and parabolic.

1. Also called Round Arches.

2. Ancient Roman builders relied heavily on the
rounded arch to span large, open areas.
3. Several rounded arches placed in-line, end-to-end,
form an arcade.

1. Most often used in Gothic-style Architecture.
2. Advantage- the arch action produces less thrust
at the base.
3. Allows for taller and more closely spaced
openings.

1. Principle- When weight is uniformly applied to an

arch, the internal compression resulting from
that weight will follow a parabolic profile.
2. Produces the most thrust at the base but spans
the larger areas.
3. Commonly used in bridges.

VAULTS AND DOMES
:
1. A term for an arched form used to provide a
space with a ceiling or roof.
2. The part of a vault exerts lateral thrust that
requires a counter resistance.
3. Thick walls and buttresses are used to supply
resistance.
VAULT TYPES
• DOME:
1. Earliest form of vault.
2. Found in Neolithic villages.
3. Mostly used to cover circular structures.
4. Represents wider sense of word vault.
5. Distinction between the two: A Vault is an arch
which is extruded in third dimension, whereas a
Dome is an arch revolved around its vertical axis.

• BARREL VAULT:
1. Simplest form of a vault.
2. Resembles a barrel or tunnel cut lengthwise in
half.
3. Earliest barrel vault in Ancient Egypt.
• GROIN VAULT:
1. When two semicircular barrel vaults of the same
diameter cross one another, their intersection is
known as groin.
2. The thrust of the vault is carried to the cross
walls or piers.
• RIB VAULT:
1. Intersection of two or three barrel vaults.
2. Edged with an armature of pipe masonry often
carved in decorative patterns.

SQINCHES
• A squinch is a construction filling in the upper angels of a
square room so as to form a base to receive an octagonal
or spherical dome.
• Formed by-
1. masonry built out from the
angle in corbelled courses
2. filling the corner with a
vise placed diagonally.
3. a no. of corbelled arches
diagonally across the
corner.
pendentive
• Constructive device permitting the placing of a
circular dome over a square room or an elliptical dome
on rectangular room.
• The pendentive thus receives the weight of dome.
• Received by the piers beneath.
