CHAPTER 1: Sets 1.1: Set Notation

This document discusses sets and set notation. The key points are: - A set is a collection of distinct objects called elements that have a common property. - Sets can be represented using roster notation which lists the elements or set builder notation which describes the properties of elements. - Elements of a set are written using symbols like ∈ to show membership or ∉ to show non-membership. - Sets must be well-defined by having unambiguous elements rather than vague collections.

CHAPTER 1: Sets

1.1: Set Notation

Below are some objects. Group them as you see fit
and label each group.
Questions:

1. How many groups are there?

2. Does each object belong to a group?
3. Is there an object that belongs to more
than one group? Which one?
A set is a group of collection
of objects of any kind.
The objects in a set may refer
to numbers, letters, people,
places, or anything that share a
common characteristic.
They are called elements of a
set.
Example: Suppose a set is composed of
the elements 0,1,2,3,a,b,c. It may be
written as:
A = {0,1,2,3,a,b,c}
Example:
If 2 is an element of A, then it may be
written as “2 ∈ A”
Likewise, any object which is not an
element of A, such as x, may be written as
“x ∈ A”.
Example:
If the element of a Set B contains
letters in the word communication then,
B = {c,o,m,u,n,i,a,t}
Well-defined Set
Ex. “The collection of Philippine
presidents”

Not a well-defined Set

Ex. “The collection of beautiful
women in a country”
Elements of a set can be written in two ways:

1. Roster Method-elements are

enumerated.
Ex. C = {1,2,3,4}
2. Set builder notation – describing
or defining properties of elements that
are stated.
Ex. C={counting numbers less than
Any set can also be represented by
a simple plane region bounded by a
closed figure.
Ex. A
3 2
1 A={1,2,3}

Well - defined or Not?

“The collection of even
numbers”
“The collection of talented
students”
“The collection of European
country”
Try This!

Write at least four elements for each

set
1. A = {asian counties}
2. B = {planets}
3. C = {TV networks in the
Philippines}
Try This!

Translate each expression into a set

notation
1. x is the element of Z.
2. i belongs to U.
3. w is not contained in Q.
Try This!

Rewrite each set from builder method to

roster method
1. A={months in a year}
2. B={letters in the word
cellphone}
3. C={parts of computer}
Activity #1: Sets
A. Write at least four elements
for each set.
1. A={Philippine presidents}
2. B={letters in the word
mathematics}
3. C={brands of cellphone}
4. D={Rainbow colors}
Activity #1: Sets
B. Rewrite each set from set builder
notation to roster method.
1. F={days in a week}
2. G={colors of the Philippine
flag}
3. H={figures of speech}
4. I={total number of students in
your section}
