Demand Side Management and Load Control - A Case Study
Demand Side Management and Load Control - A Case Study
- A case study
Objective
• To enhance the energy efficiency of smart grid and reduction cost at end users.
• To correlate ratio between demand and generation capacity by reducing peak
electricity demand.
• Introduce GSM Model for all types of users such as industrial loads, commercial
loads and residential loads.
Introduction
• The demand for electricity has been growing rapidly around the world for the last decade.
There is an urgent need to effectively manage the energy as the total energy shortage. And
now the population of India is also rising at an alarming rate and has now become 17% of the
world's total population in 2016. So, the whole power system network needs to be restructured
and new units must be deployed to mitigate this problem. But, It is not possible for developing
countries to install such large power generating units due to limited financial resources.
• The proposed solution of this problem is Demand Side Management (DSM) technique.
DSM controls the quantity of energy used at specific time to reduce peak and overall demand
by load scheduling which results in financial benefit to end users. DSM strategies generally
focus on improving efficiency and reducing cost in load scheduling.
• The major goal of DSM is to efficiently manage the loads is such a way that will eventually
improve the efficiency of the grid, reduce costly generation, decrease excessive load pressure,
increase power system stability and sustainability by maximizing system capacity without
changing whole physical infrastructure of the power system.
• Load scheduling can be done in three way
1. Day ahead scheduling
2. Real time scheduling
3. Interruptible scheduling
• Six major types are included in DSM techniques to change the load profile
curve are:
1.peak clipping
2. valley filling
3. load shifting
4. strategic conservation
5. strategic load growth and
6.flexible load shape.
