ACID RAIN

S2 - PKLH
What Is Acid Rain?
• Acid rain contains high levels of nitric and sulfuric
acids.
• Acid rain generally has a pH between 4.2 and 4.4
• A more precise term is acid deposition, which has two
parts: wet and dry.
oWet: falls as acidic rain, snow, fog, and cold vapor.
oDry: acidic gases and particles. (Carter, 2003)

Why Acid Rain Occurs?

Acid Rain Occurs by rotting vegetation and

erupting volcanoes release some chemicals
that can cause acid rain, but most acid rain is
a product of human activities. The biggest
sources are coal-burning power plants,
factories, and automobiles.
Natural Acid Rain
Although human activities cause
most acid rain, some acid rain
occurs naturally. erupting
volcanoes emit, or give off,
smoke containing water vapor,
carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide,
and nitrogen compounds cause
small amounts of acid rain near
the volcano. (Louise, 2002)
How Does Acid Rain Occurs?
• Two main waste gases from the burning of diesel fuel vehicles and coal power
plants are sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These gases react with
air to form acid. For example, sulfur dioxide reacts with oxygen to form sulfur
trioxide.

2 SO2 + O2 → 2 SO3
• Sulfur trioxide then reacts with water vapor to form sulfuric acid which is a strong
acid.

SO3 + H2O → H2SO4

• Water vapor that contains acid becomes part of the clouds that will eventually fall
down to the grounds as Acid Rain or Acid snow.

Who Can Be Affected By Acid Rain?

• Human health.
• Plants, Trees, and Forest .
• Lakes, streams, wetlands, and other aquatic
environments.
• Statues And Buildings.
• Etc.
Effect Of Acid Rain
Humans are part of being affected by acid rain.

Some acid pollution takes the form of acidic particles in the air.
when people breathe in these particles, they damage the
lungs. This damage causes asthma and other breathing
difficulties and illnesses. For people who already have
breathing problems, acid pollution makes them worse and can
cause death. (Louise, 2002)
Effect Of Acid Rain
Acid deposition can destroy some soil
nutrients, release toxins into soil, and
weaken plants .

Effects of acid rain on plants is caused

partly by chemical interaction in the
soils. Herbivores that eat these plants
can also develop calcium deficiencies.

Effect Of Acid Rain
Acid rain causes release of metals, e.g. from soil
→ rots plant roots, attacks leaves.
→ forest are destroyed.

Effect Of Acid Rain
• Acidification of lakes and
streams can lead to the death
of aquatic life.

• Acidity can leach heavy

metals like mercury out of the
soil, causing toxic levels to
build up in the fish we eat.

Positive Effects Acid Rain
(local and short term)
1. Improves visibility.
2. Dissolves some of the atmospheric pollutants poisonous to plants and
animals.
3. Washes away dust on the leaves of the urban plants and revitalize
photosynthesis.
4. Cools the hot concrete surface.
How To Prevent Acid Rain?
• Reduce air pollution by improving energy efficiency and
increasing renewable resources.
• Use natural gas/low sulfur coal.
• Encourage people to adopt waste reduction and
recycling programmes should be launched.
• Use mass transport system which is more efficient + uses
cleaner fuel.
