PROBLEM SOLVING

SKILLS
Presented by:

Eliza M. Suarez , RGC

Guidance Counselor
Objectives:
At the end of the session the participants shall be
able to:
1.define and understand what is a problem
2.Understand the steps in problem solving
3.Apply the problem solving skills in day to day
situations.
‘Life is not about having no problems,
but rather about being able to resolve them
quickly when they occur’
What are problems?

Situations in which we experience

uncertainty or difficulty in
achieving what we want to achieve
Situations in which we experience
uncertainty or difficulty in
achieving what we want to achieve
Problems arise when an OBSTACLE prevents
us reaching an OBJECTIVE

Objective = something we have decided we

need to achieve
Obstacle = anything that prevents us from
reaching an objective
In equation:

OBJECTIVE +OBSTACLE=
PROBLEM
Two groups of problems

1. CLOSED PROBLEMS
2. OPEN –ENDED PROBLEMS
CLOSED PROBLEMS occur when
something has happened that should
not have happened or something we
expected to happen has not happened
OPEN ENDED PROBLEMS OCCUR when
we want to achieve our specific objective but
there are certain obstacles blocking our
progress.
They can be subdivided into three groups;
1.Where we are unable to reach our current objective

Example: failing to meet our counseling target

Failing to implement our programs
2. Where our current objective can be exceeded
Example: improved performance
improved efficiency
Time management
3. Where a new objective could be achieved through problem
solving
Example: Creating a new service or product
Creating a new program as an offshoot to solve the
problem
The psychology of problem
Solving
WHAT IS
PROBLEM
SOLVING?
Finding ways to overcome
any obstacles and to
achieve our objectives.
STAGES OF PROBLEM
SOLVING
Stage 1: Recognizing and defining the problem
a) Collect information
b) Decide cause
Stage 2: Finding possible solutions
Stage 3: Choosing the best solution
Stage 4: Implementing the solution
a) Plan for implementation
b) Implement and test
c) Review
Stage 1: Recognizing and Defining the Problem

Before any action can be taken to solve a problem,

you need to recognize that a problem exists.

Once you have recognized a problem you need to

give it a label. This serves to focus your search
for relevant information.
Stage 2: Finding possible solutions

Involves analyzing the problem to ensure that you

fully understand it and then constructing courses
of action which will achieve your objective.

Workable solutions are developed by combining

and modifying ideas and a range of creative
techniques are available to help in the process.
Stage 3: Choosing the Best Solution
Evaluate the best solutions and select that will be most effective in
solving the problem. This involves:
a) Identifying all features of an ideal solution
b) Eliminating solutions which do not meet the constraints
c) Evaluating the remaining solutions against the outcome
d) Assessing the risk associated with the “best” solution
e) Making the decision to implement this solution
Remember:

A problem is only solved when a

solution has been implemented.
In some situations , before it can take
place , you need to gain acceptance of
the solution by other people or get
their authority to implement it.
Stage 4: Implementing the solution
Involves 3 stages:
a)Planning and preparing to implement the
solution
b)Taking the appropriate action and monitoring its
effects
c)Reviewing the ultimate success of the action.

SOFT SKILLS ON PROBLEM
SOLVING
Let us remember that in every problem
in our life God is always there to carry us
and answer our prayers.
Let us practice our Problem
Solving Skills.
1. As a group identify a problem scenario and
apply the problem solving steps discussed
earlier
2. Assign one documenter and a reporter.
3. Reporting of output to the group.
“ Being wise is better than being strong.” yes,
knowledge is more important than strength. “After all,
you must make careful plans before you fight a battle,
and the more good advice you get, the more likely you
are to win.

Proverbs 24: 5-6
