WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

The concept of Emotional

Intelligence is an umbrella term
that encompasses a broad
collection of individual skills,
competencies and dispositions,
usually referred to as “soft skills”
or “Interpersonal Skills”.
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Emotional Intelligence is the

ability to sense, understand and
effectively apply the power and
acumen of emotions as a
source of human energy,
information and influence.
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to

manage oneself and one’s relationships in
mature and constructive ways.

Or

EI is the intelligent use of our emotions

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to
monitor and manage the emotions of
self and others
OR
EI is the ability to manage oneself and
one’s relationships in mature and
constructive ways.
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?
It can be said that Emotional Intelligence is
practical intelligence.

In Gallup interviews of thousands people to

determine the root cause of success in life
and work, the importance of ‘Intelligence’
was mentioned again and again. But when
the researchers pressed for a definition of
“Intelligence”, they received an interesting
answer.
(contd…..)
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?
Intelligence was not defined as a high IQ or good
grades in school. Rather, intelligence was most
commonly defined as a “WAY OF ACTING”.

In other words, if you act intelligently, you are

intelligent. If you act unintelligently, you are
unintelligent, irrespective of the grades you may
have received or the degrees you have earned.

Research Findings
Hay Group research has also found that the people
who have high EI have some surprising things in
common like:
 They don’t bite off more than they can chew;

 They focus their energy on making the most of

their strengths before looking at their
weaknesses;
 They are feedback junkies – they are tenacious
about asking those around them for feedback to
see if they are doing well.
Research Findings
It was found that the key quality that differentiated
the successful (such as Roosevelt, Kennedy, and
Regan) from the unsuccessful (such as Johnson,
Carter, and Nixon) was Emotional Intelligence.

Research Findings
 More than 50% of all CEOs of fortune 500
Companies had “C” or C-Average in college.

 65% of all US Senators came from the Bottom

half of their school classes.

 75% of US Presidents were in the lower-half club

in school.

 More than 50% of millionaire entrepreneurs never

finished college.
Importance of EQ
 Studies indicate that IQ attributes only 20% to
success while EQ predominantly contributes to
80%
 If IQ gets you hired, it is EQ that gets you
promoted.
 IQ can give you positional power but EQ can
give you Personal Power
 IQ does not increase after adolescence

Contd…..
Importance of EQ
 EQ is largely learned and continues to develop
throughout life.

 Research shows that IQ does not guarantee

success for individuals. Those who combine high
IQ and high EI are the most likely to succeed.

 According to Goleman, high IQ makes you a

brilliant teacher or financial analyst, but high IQ
and high EQ make you their leader.
