Serving God With Diligence: ROMANS 12:11

Jesus strongly condemned laziness and a lack of diligence in serving God. He taught that those who put personal pursuits over serving God would miss out on eternal rewards. In the parable of the talents, Jesus portrayed the danger of being a slothful servant who hides his talents instead of multiplying them for his master. He also rebuked the church of Laodicea for their lukewarm faith and service, showing that God desires believers to be fervent and enthusiastic in their devotion to him.

laziness?
1. He taught that those who put
personal pursuits first would not
enjoy heaven - Lk 14:15-24
The Parable of the Great Banquet
15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the

kingdom of God.”
16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his

servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse

me.’
19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant,

‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will

be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

Matthew 25:24-30New International Version (NIV)
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man,

harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and
went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and

gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the
bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags.29 For whoever has will be given

more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from
them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.’

3.He condemned the church of
Laodicea for their lukewarmness –
Rev. 3:14-16
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true
witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your
deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were
either one or the other! 16 So, because you are
lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you
out of my mouth.
