Chapter 4 Lesson 11

Lesson 11 covers exponential functions, equations, and inequalities. An exponential expression is of the form a ∙ b^x - c + d, where b > 0 and b ≠ 1. Exponential equations set two exponential expressions equal to each other. Exponential inequalities relate exponential expressions using inequality symbols. Exponential functions relate two variables, usually x and y, where y is of the form b^x. Examples of each are provided and exercises ask the reader to identify examples as functions, equations, or inequalities.

 What is exponential Expression?
 an Exponential expression is an expression of the
form a ∙ 𝑏 𝑥 −𝑐 + d, where b > 0, b ≠ 1.
The definitions of exponential equations, inequalities,
and functions are shown below.

expressions. expressions 1.

𝟐 𝟏 f(x) = (𝟏. 𝟖)𝒙 or y

Example 𝟕𝟐𝒙 −𝒙 = 𝟓𝟐𝒙 - 𝟓𝒙+𝟏
𝟑𝟒𝟑 = (𝟏. 𝟖)𝒙
Note: An exponential equation or inequality can be
solved for all x values that satisfy the equation or
inequality. An exponential function is not ‘solved’
Rather, it expresses a relationship between two
variables (such as x and y), and can be represented
by a table of values or a graph.
Exercises: Determine whether the given is an
exponential function, an exponential equation, an
exponential inequality or none of these.
a) f(x) = 2𝑥 3
b) f(x) = 2 𝑥
c) y = 𝑒 𝑥
d) 22 (5 𝑥+1 ) = 500
e) 625 ≥ 5 𝑥+8
