Definition of Data, Data Processing Data Processing Cycle Data vs. Information

Data processing involves converting raw data into meaningful information through a defined process. It follows a cycle where raw data is input, processed using computer systems and software, and output as information and insights. Data refers to unorganized facts like test scores, while information is derived from processed data and structured for usefulness, like average test scores of a class. The data processing cycle consists of input, processing, and output stages, where raw data is fed in as input, processed to provide the output, which is now useful information rather than raw data.

Data Processing Cycle

Data Vs. Information
Data processing in short – what you need to
know!
• Data processing is simply the conversion of raw
data to meaningful information through a process.
• Data is manipulated to produce results that lead to
a resolution of a problem or improvement of an
existing situation.
• Similar to a production process, it follows a cycle
where inputs (raw data) are fed to a process
(computer systems, software, etc.) to produce
output (information and insights).”
What is DATA?
• In general, data is any set of characters that has been
gathered and translated for some purpose, usually
analysis.It can be any character.
Text and numbers
sound or video
pictures
Within the computer’s storage, data is a collection of
numbers represented as bytes that are in turn composed of
bits(binary digits)that can have the value one or zero.Data
is processed by the CPU ,which uses logical operations to
produce new data(output)from source data (input).
Data Vs. Information
Data Information

Data is raw , unorganized When data is processed ,

facts that need to be organized , structured or
processed. presented in a given context
so as to make it useful.
Example: Each student’s test Example:The average score
score is one piece of data. of a class or of the entire
school is information that can
be derived from the given
data.

INFO.
Data Processing Cycle
• Data processing is the re-structuring or re-
ordering of data by people or machine to
increase their usefulness and add values for a
particular purpose.
• Data processing consists of the following
basic steps - input, processing, and output.
These three steps constitute the data
processing cycle.
Input – The raw data after collection
needs to be fed in the cycle for
processing. This is considered the first
step and called input.
INPUT DEVICES
1.Webcam
2.Keyboard
3.Biometrics
4.Microphone
5.Joystick
6.Hard drive
7.mouse,etc
Processing – Once the input is provided
the raw data is processed by a suitable or
selected processing method. This is the
most important step as it provides the
processed data in form of output which
will be used further.
Output – This is the final outcome and
the raw data provided in the first stage
is now “processed” and the data is
useful and provides information and no
longer called data.
