Properties of Real Numbers

The document describes several properties of real numbers: 1) The closure property states that the sum or product of any two real numbers is a real number. 2) The commutative property states that real numbers can be added or multiplied in any order without changing the result. 3) The associative property states that the sum or product of three or more real numbers is the same regardless of how the numbers are grouped.

Properties

of
Real
Numbers
Closure Property

 The sum or product of any two real

numbers is a real number.
Example
Addition: 2+3=5
Multiplication: 2x3=6
Commutative Property

 You can add or multiply real numbers in

any order without changing the result.
Example
Addition: 7 + 11 = 11 + 7
Multiplication: 7 x 11 = 11 x 7
Associative Property

 The sum or product of three or more real

numbers is the same regardless of the way
the numbers are grouped.
Example
Addition: (5 + 3) + 7 = 5 + (3 + 7)
Multiplication: (5 x 3) x 7 = 5 x (3 x 7)
Identity Property

Additive Identity Property

The sum of a number and 0, the additive
identity, is the original number
Example
3+0=3
Identity Property

Multiplicative Identity Property

The product of a number and 1, the
multiplicative identity, is the original number.
Example
3x1=3
Inverse Property

Additive Inverse Property

The sum of a number and its opposite, or
additive inverse, is 0.
Example
5 + (-5) = 0
Inverse Property

Multiplicative Inverse Property

The product of a nonzero number and its
reciprocal, or multiplicative inverse, is 1.
Example
1
3x =1
3
Distributive Property

 When you multiply a sum by a number, the

result is the same whether you add and then
multiply or whether you multiply each term
by the number and add the products.
Example
5 x (2 + 8) = 5 x 2 + 5 x 8
(2 + 8) x 5 = 2 x 5 + 8 x 5
Property Addition Multiplication
Closure 2+3=5 2x3=6
Commutative 7 + 11 = 11 + 7 7 x 11 = 11 x 7
Associative (5 + 3) + 7 = 5 + (3 + 7) (5 x 3) x7 = 5 x (3 x 7)
Identity 3+0=3 3x1=3
1
Inverse 5 + (-5) = 0 3x =1
3
5 x (2 + 8) = 5 x 2 + 5 x 8
Distributive
(2 + 8) x 5 = 2 x 5 + 8 x 5
Practice Example:
Name the property illustrated by the following equations.
a. -7 + 3 = 3 + (-7)
2 5 1 2 5 1
b. [( ) x ( )] x (- ) = ( ) x [( ) x (- )]
3 21 8 3 21 8
c. 5+0= 5
5 9
d. ( )
x =1 ( )
9 5
e. The product of two real numbers 4 and 20 is a real
number.
f. 2 x (4 + 12) = 2 x 4 + 2 x 12
